Every child asks what happens after we die. Islam answers clearly, and the answer is mostly good news: we return to Allah, nothing we did is lost, and Allah has prepared for the righteous what no eye has ever seen. These lessons keep the tone hopeful — the fear that helps a child is the fear of being unfair to people, not nightmares.
Lesson 1 · This life is short · ages 8-11
Everyone returns to Allah
Nobody stays here forever. The Qur'an says every soul will taste death, and that this life is a test, not the destination.
1Every soul will taste death
Allah says every soul will taste death, and that we will be returned to Him.
2Full payment comes later
The Qur'an says every soul will be paid in full what it earned, and whoever is kept away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has truly succeeded.
3This world is the smaller part
Allah calls the life of this world an enjoyment of delusion compared with what comes after — not because it is worthless, but because it is short.
4It is not a scary secret
Muslims say inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un when someone dies: we belong to Allah and to Him we return.
5So use the time
A short test with a known ending is a reason to be good now, not a reason to be sad.
Kulu nafsin zaaa'iqatul mawt; wa innamaa tuwaffawna ujoorakum Yawmal Qiyaamati faman zuhziha 'anin Naari waudkhilal Jannata faqad faaz; wa mal hayaatud dunyaaa illaa mataa'ul ghuroor
“Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.”

إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un
Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.
Qur'an 2:156 — said when hearing bad news or of a death
Do this before next time
Learn inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un by heart, and ask your parents who in your family you should make dua for.
Lesson 2 · The scales · ages 8-11
The day nothing is lost
On that day Allah sets up scales that are never unfair, and even the weight of a tiny ant of good is shown.
1Nothing is missed
Allah says whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it.
2The scales are exact
Allah places the just balance for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul is wronged in the least.
3We will be asked
The Prophet ﷺ said a servant's feet will not move until he is asked about his life, his knowledge, his wealth — how he earned it and where he spent it — and his body.
4Small things count both ways
A kind word to a lonely classmate is on the scales; so is a cruel nickname. Nothing is too small to matter.
5Allah's mercy is bigger
We prepare seriously and then hope in Allah — a believer never says there is no point trying.
Wa nada'ul mawaazeenal qista li Yawmil Qiyaamati falaa tuzlamu nafsun shai'aa; wa in kaana misqaala habbatim min khardalin atainaa bihaa; wa kafaa binaa haasibeen
“And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is [even] the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant.”
“The feet of the slave of Allah shall not move on the Day of Judgement until he is asked about five things: about his life and what he did with it, about his knowledge and what he did with it, about his wealth and how he earned it and where he spent it, and about his body and for what he wore it out.”
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2417
Do this before next time
Keep a list for one day of every small good thing you do — then count how quickly it fills up.
Lesson 3 · Jannah · ages 5-7
What Allah has prepared
Jannah is better than anything we can picture — the Prophet ﷺ said no eye has ever seen it and no mind has imagined it.
1Beyond imagining
Allah said: I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human mind has imagined.
2Gardens that never end
Allah promises those who believe and do good the Gardens of Paradise, where they will stay forever and never want to leave.
3Nothing sad in it
There is no illness, no fear, no bullying and no goodbyes in Jannah.
4The way in is mercy
Nobody earns Jannah by counting deeds — we do our best and Allah lets us in by His mercy.
5Ask for it by name
Say Allahumma inni as'aluka al-jannah — O Allah, I ask You for Paradise.
“Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - they will have the Gardens of Paradise as a lodging,”
“Allah said: I have prepared for My pious servants things which have never been seen by an eye, nor heard by an ear, nor imagined by a human being.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 3244
Do this before next time
Draw the garden you would ask Allah for, then make the dua asking Him for Jannah.
Lesson 4 · Small good, big shield · ages 5-7
Saved by half a date
The Prophet ﷺ said to protect yourself from the Fire even with half a date given in charity. Nothing you give is too small.
1The hadith
Adi ibn Hatim heard the Prophet ﷺ say: save yourself from Hell-fire even by giving half a date-fruit in charity.
2You already have enough to give
Half your snack, your seat on the bus, your turn on the game — a child can give charity every single day.
3Charity is not only money
A smile, helping carry bags, moving a stone off the path: the Prophet ﷺ counted all of these as sadaqah.
4Give it quietly
Sadaqah given without announcing it is safer for the heart.
5Little and constant
Allah loves deeds that are small and regular more than a big one done once.
“Save yourself from Hell-fire even by giving half a date-fruit in charity.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1417
Do this before next time
Give half of your snack to someone today without telling anyone you did it.
Lesson 5 · Sadaqah jariyah · ages 12-15
Deeds that keep going
Three things carry on giving reward after a person dies: ongoing charity, useful knowledge, and a child who prays for them.
1The hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: when a man dies his deeds come to an end, except three — recurring charity, knowledge people benefit from, and a righteous child who prays for him.
2Ongoing charity
A well, a tree, a book left in a masjid, a class someone can still use in twenty years.
3Knowledge that spreads
Teaching a younger cousin Surah al-Fatihah properly is knowledge that keeps being recited.
4Praying for parents
Making dua for your parents is one of the three — it is a duty a child never grows out of.
5Plan one now
You do not have to be an adult: plant something, teach something, help build something that lasts.
“When a man dies, his acts come to an end, but three: recurring charity, or knowledge by which people benefit, or a pious child who prays for him.”
Sahih Muslim 1631
