Dawah for children

Sharing what you know, kindly

Dawah is not arguing with strangers. For a child it means being trustworthy enough that people ask, and kind enough that they listen. The Prophet ﷺ told us to convey even a single sentence, ordered his Companions to make things easy and not hard, stopped a crowd from shouting at a man who had just made a mess in the masjid, and taught that whoever calls people to guidance keeps earning as long as they act on it. These five lessons put that into a child's own school, street and family, each with the ayah from the verified Qur'an text and the hadith resolvable on sunnah.com.

Lesson 1 · You already know enough · ages 5-7

Pass on even one sentence

The Prophet ﷺ told us to convey his teaching to people even if it is only one sentence.

  1. The hadith

'Abdullah ibn 'Amr reported the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Convey my teachings to the people even if it were a single sentence.'

  2. You are not too young

One ayah, one dua, one hadith you learned today is already something you can pass on.

  3. Say it accurately

Only share what you actually learned from a teacher or a book — 'I don't know' is a complete Muslim answer.

  4. Teach the person next to you

A younger sibling, a cousin, a friend who missed the lesson: that is your class.

  5. Live it first

People copy what they see you do far more than what they hear you say.

Surah An-Nahl · 16:125

Ud'u ilaa sabeeli Rabbika bilhikmati walmaw 'izatil hasanati wa jaadilhum billatee hiya ahsan; inna Rabbaka huwa a'almu biman dalla 'an sabeelihee wa Huwa a'lamu bilmuhtadeen

“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.”

Surah Fussilat · 41:33

Wa man ahsanu qawlam mimman da'aaa ilal laahi wa 'amila saalihanw wa qaala innanee minal muslimeen

“And who is better in speech than one who invites to Allah and does righteousness and says, "Indeed, I am of the Muslims."”

“Convey (my teachings) to the people even if it were a single sentence.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 3461

Lesson 2 · How to invite · ages 8-11

Make it easy, not hard

The Prophet ﷺ told his Companions to facilitate things for people and not to make things difficult.

  1. The hadith

Anas ibn Malik reported the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Facilitate things to people and do not make it hard for them, and give them glad tidings and do not repel them.'

  2. Start with good news

Tell a friend about Allah's mercy and reward before you tell them everything they are doing wrong.

  3. One step at a time

Someone learning to pray does not need to hear about every ruling in one afternoon.

  4. Choose your moment

Bukhari's chapter title notes the Prophet ﷺ picked suitable times to teach so people would not get bored or run away.

  5. Never mock

Laughing at someone's Arabic, clothes or questions ends the conversation and the friendship.

Surah Al-Baqara · 2:185

“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.”

Surah Aal-i-Imraan · 3:159

“So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].”

“Facilitate things to people (concerning religious matters), and do not make it hard for them, and give them good tidings and do not make them run away (from Islam).”

Sahih al-Bukhari 69

Do this before next time

Next time someone asks you a question about Islam, answer the one thing they asked — nothing more.

Lesson 3 · The Prophet's ﷺ example · ages 8-11

Gentle when someone slips

When a bedouin made a mess in the masjid, the Prophet ﷺ stopped people from shouting at him and had water poured over it.

  1. The hadith

Abu Hurayra reported a bedouin urinated in the mosque; the people seized him, and the Prophet ﷺ ordered them to leave him and to pour a bucket of water over the spot.

  2. Fix, then teach

He dealt with the mess calmly first and taught afterwards, instead of humiliating the man in front of everyone.

  3. Shouting teaches nothing

A person shamed in public defends themselves; a person treated gently listens.

  4. New Muslims and visitors

Someone who has just come to the masjid may not know where to stand or what to say. Guide them quietly.

  5. Ask for help kindly

If you must correct a friend, do it privately, once, in a low voice.

Surah Taa-Haa · 20:44

Faqoolaa lahoo qawlal laiyinal la allahoo yatazakkkaru 'aw yakhshaa

“And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allah]."”

“A bedouin stood up and started making water in the mosque. The people caught him, but the Prophet (ﷺ) ordered them to leave him and to pour a bucket or a tumbler of water over the place where he had passed the urine.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 220

Do this before next time

If someone gets something wrong in class or at the masjid today, help them without an audience.

Lesson 4 · What it is worth · ages 12-15

Guiding one person

Before Khaybar the Prophet ﷺ said that Allah guiding one man through you is better than great wealth.

  1. The hadith

Sahl ibn Sa'd reported the Prophet ﷺ said on the day of Khaybar that he would give the flag to a man through whom Allah would grant victory, and told 'Ali that Allah guiding one man through him is better than red camels — the most prized wealth of the time.

  2. Numbers are not the point

One person praying because of you outweighs a thousand people applauding you.

  3. Guidance is from Allah

You carry the message; Allah opens the heart. That saves you from arrogance when someone accepts and from despair when they don't.

  4. Keep the door open

A friend who says no today may ask you again in two years — if you stayed kind.

  5. Invite by being useful

Being the honest, helpful, reliable Muslim in a group is dawah before you say a word.

Surah Yusuf · 12:108

Qul haazihee sabeeleee ad'ooo ilal laah; 'alaa baseera tin ana wa manit taba'anee wa Subhaanal laahi wa maaa ana minal mushrikeen

“Say, "This is my way; I invite to Allah with insight, I and those who follow me. And exalted is Allah; and I am not of those who associate others with Him."”

Surah Al-Qasas · 28:56

Innaka laa tahdee man ahbata wa laakinna laaha yahdee mai yashaaa'; wa Huwaa'lamu bilmuhtadeen

“Indeed, [O Muhammad], you do not guide whom you like, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He is most knowing of the [rightly] guided.”

“By Allah, that Allah guides one man through you is better for you than possessing red camels.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2942

Do this before next time

Lesson 5 · Starting something good · ages 12-15

The reward that keeps growing

Whoever calls people to guidance gets the reward of everyone who follows it — and whoever calls to error carries their sin.

  1. The hadith

Abu Hurayra reported the Prophet ﷺ said whoever called people to righteousness has reward like the rewards of those who follow it, without theirs being reduced — and whoever called to error carries the like of their sin.

  2. It multiplies

Teach your cousin a dua; she teaches her class; you are still earning from a room you never entered.

  3. The warning half

The same rule runs the other way, which is why sharing a mocking video or a false claim is not harmless fun.

  4. Check before you forward

Never pass on a hadith, fatwa or clip you have not checked to a source — this app cites every hadith so you can verify it.

  5. Start something small

A weekly halaqah with friends, a masjid clean-up, a dua card on the fridge — small starts are what this hadith describes.

Surah Fussilat · 41:33

Surah An-Nahl · 16:125

“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way, and He is most knowing of who is [rightly] guided.”

“He who called (people) to righteousness, there would be reward (assured) for him like the rewards of those who adhered to it, without their rewards being diminished in any respect. And he who called (people) to error, he shall have to carry (the burden) of its sin, like those who committed it, without their sins being diminished in any respect.”
