In Islam the family is not a background detail — it is where most of a Muslim's reward is earned or lost. Allah placed kindness to parents immediately after worshipping Him alone, and the Prophet ﷺ tied a person's provision and lifespan to keeping ties with relatives. These five lessons turn that into things a child does at home this week.
Lesson 1 · Birr al-walidayn · ages 8-11
The rank of parents
Allah mentions kindness to parents right after worshipping Him alone. It is the second thing, not a small thing.
1Straight after tawhid
Allah decrees that we worship none but Him, and that we be good to parents — the two commands come together.
2Never even 'uff'
Allah forbids saying even a word of irritation to them, and commands speaking to them with gentle, noble words.
3Mother first
Asked who has the most right to good treatment, the Prophet ﷺ said: your mother, then your mother, then your mother, then your father.
4Best deeds in order
Asked about the dearest deed to Allah, the Prophet ﷺ said prayer at its proper time, then kindness to parents, then jihad in Allah's cause.
5Obey in what is good
Obedience to parents is in everything except disobedience to Allah — and even refusing is done respectfully.
Wa qadaa Rabbuka allaa ta'budooo illaaa iyyaahu wa bilwaalidaini ihsaanaa; immaa yablughanna 'indakal kibara ahaduhumaaa aw kilaahumaa falaa taqul lahumaaa uffinw wa laa tanharhumaa wa qullahumaa qawlan kareemaa
“And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word.”
Wa wassainal bi waalidaihi hamalat hu ummuhoo wahnan 'alaa wahninw wa fisaaluhoo fee 'aamaini anishkur lee wa liwaalidaika ilaiyal maseer
“And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.”
“Your mother, then your mother, then your mother, then your father, then your nearest relatives.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5971
“The prayer at its proper time... then to be good and dutiful to one's parents.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 527
Do this before next time
Ask your mother one thing she needs doing today, do it fully, and do not mention it again.
Lesson 2 · Birr in practice · ages 5-7
Serving them, not just loving them
Birr is a verb. It is tea carried in, shoes tidied, a younger sibling watched — done before you are asked twice.
1Small acts, huge reward
The Prophet ﷺ placed being dutiful to parents among the deeds dearest to Allah — it does not have to be dramatic to count.
2Speak gently at home
Allah's instruction is to say a noble word to them — the tone counts, not only the words.
3Do not make them chase you
Coming when called the first time is part of birr, and it is one of the hardest bits.
4Spending on them is charity
Money or effort given to your own family is sadaqah, not something separate from it.
5Keep going after childhood
Birr does not stop when you grow up — Allah's words are about parents reaching old age.
“The prayer at its proper time... then to be good and dutiful to one's parents.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 527
Do this before next time
Bring a parent a drink and sit with them for ten minutes with no screen in the room.
Lesson 3 · Fairness at home · ages 8-11
Brothers and sisters
Siblings are the people you will annoy most and need most. Islam has rules for exactly this.
1Want for them what you want
The Prophet ﷺ said none of you truly believes until he wants for his brother what he wants for himself.
2Do not stay angry
The Prophet ﷺ said it is not lawful for a Muslim to shun his brother beyond three days — so arguments get repaired.
3No mocking or nicknames
Allah forbids ridiculing people or calling them by offensive nicknames — this includes your own family.
4Share properly
Sharing means an even split, not the smaller half for the younger one because they will not notice.
5Defend, do not report
Telling parents to get a sibling punished is different from getting them help. Check which one you are doing.
Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo laa yaskhar qawmum min qawmin 'asaaa anyyakoonoo khairam minhum wa laa nisaaa'um min nisaaa'in 'Asaaa ay yakunna khairam minhunna wa laa talmizooo bil alqaab; bi'sal ismul fusooqu ba'dal eemaan; wa mal-lam yatub fa-ulaaa'ika humuz zaalimoon
“O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.”
“None of you will have faith till he wishes for his brother what he likes for himself.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 13
“It is not lawful for a Muslim to shun his brother for more than three days.”
Sunan Abi Dawud 4914
Do this before next time
Settle one argument with a sibling today by giving up your turn on purpose.
Lesson 4 · Silat ar-rahm · ages 12-15
Keeping family ties
Cutting off relatives is treated as a serious sin in Islam. Keeping the ties is linked to provision and to Allah's own mercy.
1The promise
The Prophet ﷺ said whoever desires an expansion in his sustenance and his age should keep good relations with his kith and kin.
2The name says it
The Prophet ﷺ reported that Allah said: I am ar-Rahman, I created the womb (rahm) and derived its name from Mine; whoever maintains it, I maintain ties with him, and whoever severs it, I sever ties with him.
3It is not a trade
The Prophet ﷺ said the one who truly joins ties (al-wasil) is not the one who merely repays the kindness of relatives, but the one who keeps good relations with the relative who cut him off.
4Even difficult relatives
Salam, a message, a visit at Eid, asking after them when they are ill — small, steady contact.
5Do not pass on gossip
Most family breaks are carried by tale-carrying, which the Prophet ﷺ condemned.
Yaaa aiyuhan naasut taqoo Rabbakumul lazee khalaqakum min nafsinw waahidatinw wa khalaqa minhaa zawjahaa wa bas sa minhumaa rijaalan kaseeranw wa nisaaa'aa; wattaqul laahallazee tasaaa 'aloona bihee wal arhaam; innal laaha kaana 'alaikum Raqeeba
“O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.”
Wallazeena yasiloona maaa amaral laahu bihee an yoosala wa yakhshawna Rabbahum wa yakhaafoona sooo'al hisaab
“And those who join that which Allah has ordered to be joined and fear their Lord and are afraid of the evil of [their] account,”
“Whoever desires an expansion in his sustenance and age, should keep good relations with his Kith and kin.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 2067
“Al-Wasil is not the one who recompenses the good done to him by his relatives, but Al-Wasil is the one who keeps good relations with those relatives who had severed the bond of kinship with him.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5991
Do this before next time
Call or message one relative you have not spoken to in a month, with no reason except salam.
Lesson 5 · Mercy in both directions · ages 8-11
The old and the young
A community is judged by how it treats the two groups who cannot look after themselves — the elderly and children.
1The hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: he is not one of us who does not show mercy to our young ones and respect to our elders.
2Respect looks like something
Standing to give your seat, carrying the bags, slowing your walk, listening to a story you have heard before.
3Grandparents come under kinship
They are among the closest relatives, so silat ar-rahm applies directly to them.
4Be gentle with little ones
The Prophet ﷺ kissed and carried children and shortened his prayer when he heard a baby cry — kindness to children is sunnah, not softness.
5Sick and disabled relatives
Visiting the sick is a right one Muslim has over another, and it starts inside your own family.
“He is not one of us who does not have mercy on young children, nor honour the elderly.”
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1920
“Whoever does not show mercy to our young ones, and does not recognise the rights of our elders, is not one of us.”
Sunan Abi Dawud 4943
Do this before next time
Spend fifteen minutes with the oldest person in your family and ask them about when they were your age.
