The surah in every rak'ah

Surah al-Fatihah, line by line

A child who prays five times a day says al-Fatihah at least seventeen times before the sun sets again. These lessons take it line by line — praise, mercy, the Day of Judgement, asking Allah alone, and the request for guidance — with the ayah text pulled from the verified Uthmani Qur'an and every narration carrying its collection and number.

Lesson 1 · Why it opens everything · ages 5-7

The surah you say most

Al-Fatihah is the first surah of the Qur'an and the one we repeat in every single rak'ah of every prayer. The Prophet ﷺ taught that a prayer without it is not valid.

  1. Fatihah means the opening

It is the surah the Qur'an opens with, and the surah each prayer opens with.

  2. Seven ayahs

It is short enough for a five-year-old to learn, and deep enough to think about for a lifetime.

  3. Required in prayer

The Prophet ﷺ said the prayer of someone who does not recite al-Fatihah is not valid.

  4. The Prophet ﷺ called it great

He described it as the seven often-repeated verses and the Great Qur'an he was given.

  5. Say it slowly

Rushing it is the easiest mistake to make. Try pausing at the end of each ayah.

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:1

Lesson 2 · Alhamdulillahi Rabbil-'alamin · ages 5-7

All praise belongs to Allah

We begin by praising the One who made everything and who looks after everything. And when a servant says it in prayer, Allah answers them.

  1. Praise, not a complaint

The first thing we say to Allah is thank you — before we ask Him for anything.

  2. Rabb means more than Lord

It carries the meaning of the One who created, owns and cares for all the worlds.

  3. All the worlds

Not only people — the seas, the insects, the stars and everything we have never seen.

  4. Allah replies

In a hadith the Prophet ﷺ reported that when the servant says this ayah, Allah says: 'My servant has praised Me.'

  5. Try it at home

Say Alhamdulillah for one specific thing today, not just as a habit word.

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:2

ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَٰلَمِينَ

Alhamdu lillaahi Rabbil 'aalameen

“[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds -”

“Allah said: I have divided the prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves. When the servant says 'All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds,' Allah says: My servant has praised Me.”

Lesson 3 · Mercy and justice together · ages 8-11

Most Merciful — and King of the Day of Judgement

Two ayahs sit side by side: Allah is the Most Merciful, and Allah is the Master of the Day of Judgement. A Muslim holds both in mind at once.

  1. Ar-Rahman, ar-Raheem

Two names of mercy, repeated straight after the praise — mercy is how Allah introduces Himself.

  2. Hope, so we never despair

No child should ever think their mistake is too big for Allah's mercy.

  3. Master of the Day of Judgement

The next ayah reminds us that everything we do will be seen and weighed.

  4. Why both matter

Mercy without accountability makes us careless; accountability without mercy makes us hopeless.

  5. Allah answers again

The same hadith reports Allah saying 'My servant has extolled Me' and 'My servant has glorified Me' at these ayahs.

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:3

ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

Ar-Rahmaanir-Raheem

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:4

Lesson 4 · The middle ayah · ages 8-11

Only You we worship, only You we ask

This ayah is the turning point of the surah. It is where we stop describing Allah and start speaking to Him: we worship You alone, and we ask You alone for help.

  1. Worship belongs to Allah alone

Not to any created thing — this is the meaning of tawhid in one short line.

  2. Help too

We ask Allah for help even in small things: a test, a lost item, a worry we cannot explain.

  3. 'We', not 'I'

The word is plural. A child praying alone is still praying with the whole ummah.

  4. Asking people is allowed

You can ask your mum for help with homework. The ayah is about depending on Allah as the One who truly gives.

  5. The Prophet's ﷺ advice

He told a young Ibn Abbas: when you ask, ask of Allah; when you seek help, seek help from Allah.

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:5

إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ

Iyyaaka na'budu wa lyyaaka nasta'een

“It is You we worship and You we ask for help.”

Lesson 5 · The one thing we ask for · ages 12-15

Guide us to the straight path

Out of everything a person could ask Allah for, the surah asks for guidance — and then describes the path as the road of those Allah has blessed.

  1. Guidance first

We ask for the road before we ask for anything on it. Everything else depends on it.

  2. Sirat al-mustaqim

A straight path — no detours, no shortcuts, no doubling back.

  3. We ask daily

Being guided once is not enough; we are asking to be kept on it every prayer.

  4. The path has company

The last ayah describes it as the way of those Allah favoured, not the way of those who earned anger or went astray.

  5. Allah's answer

The hadith ends: 'This is for My servant, and My servant shall have what he asked for.'

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:6

ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ

Ihdinas-Siraatal-Mustaqeem

“Guide us to the straight path -”

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:7

Lesson 6 · The word at the end · ages 5-7

Say Ameen

When al-Fatihah finishes we say Ameen — 'O Allah, accept it.' The Prophet ﷺ taught that saying it with the angels brings forgiveness.

  1. What it means

Ameen is a dua in one word: O Allah, answer this.

  2. After the imam

The Prophet ﷺ told us to say Ameen when the imam says it.

  3. With the angels

He said whoever's Ameen coincides with that of the angels will have their sins forgiven.

  4. Not a shout

We say it clearly and calmly, not louder than the person next to us.

  5. Alone too

You say Ameen after al-Fatihah even when you pray by yourself at home.

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:7

صِرَٰطَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ غَيْرِ ٱلْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا ٱلضَّآلِّينَ

Siraatal-lazeena an'amta 'alaihim ghayril-maghdoobi 'alaihim wa lad-daaalleen

“The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.”

“When the Imam says Ameen, say Ameen, for whoever's Ameen coincides with the Ameen of the angels will be forgiven.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 780
