What Allah tells us about Isa

Isa in the Qur'an

Muslims love Isa, son of Maryam, and believing in him is part of our faith. These lessons stay strictly inside what Allah tells us in the Qur'an, so you learn what he really said about himself. Every ayah is shown from the verified Uthmani text.

Lesson 1 · A worshipper in the mihrab · ages 5-7

Maryam, chosen and pure

Maryam is the only woman named in the Qur'an. The angels told her Allah had chosen her and purified her.

  1. Allah chose her

The angels said Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.

  2. She worshipped a lot

She was told to prostrate and bow with those who bow.

  3. She had a place of prayer

The Qur'an mentions Zakariya finding her in her prayer chamber, with provision from Allah.

  4. Allah provided for her

When asked where it came from, she said it is from Allah, who provides without limit.

  5. A surah has her name

There is a surah in the Qur'an that carries her name, Maryam.

Surah Aal-i-Imraan · 3:42

Wa iz qaalatil malaaa'ikatu yaa Ya Maryamu innal laahas tafaaki wa tahharaki wastafaaki 'alaa nisaaa'il 'aalameen

“And [mention] when the angels said, "O Mary, indeed Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you above the women of the worlds.”

Surah Aal-i-Imraan · 3:43

يَٰمَرْيَمُ ٱقْنُتِى لِرَبِّكِ وَٱسْجُدِى وَٱرْكَعِى مَعَ ٱلرَّٰكِعِينَ

Yaa Maryamuq nutee li Rabbiki wasjudee warka'ee ma'ar raaki'een

“O Mary, be devoutly obedient to your Lord and prostrate and bow with those who bow [in prayer]."”

Surah Aal-i-Imraan · 3:37

“So her Lord accepted her with good acceptance and caused her to grow in a good manner and put her in the care of Zechariah. Every time Zechariah entered upon her in the prayer chamber, he found with her provision. He said, "O Mary, from where is this [coming] to you?" She said, "It is from Allah. Indeed, Allah provides for whom He wills without account."”

Lesson 2 · Allah only has to say 'Be' · ages 5-7

The good news of a son

Maryam was told she would have a son with no father. She was amazed, and was told that for Allah this is easy.

  1. The announcement

The angels said Allah gives you good news of a word from Him, whose name is the Messiah, Isa son of Maryam.

  2. Her question

She asked how she could have a child when no man had touched her.

  3. The answer

She was told Allah creates what He wills; when He decrees a matter He says 'Be' and it is.

  4. A sign for people

The Qur'an says he was made a sign for mankind and a mercy from Allah.

  5. Nothing is hard for Allah

Isa's birth is a miracle that shows Allah's power, not that Allah has a son.

Surah Aal-i-Imraan · 3:45

Surah Maryam · 19:20

Lesson 3 · His very first words · ages 8-11

The baby who spoke

When people accused Maryam, her baby spoke. His first recorded words were about being a servant of Allah.

  1. 'I am a servant of Allah'

The Qur'an records his first words: 'Indeed, I am a servant of Allah.'

  2. He was given the Book

He said Allah has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.

  3. Prayer and zakah

He said he was enjoined to pray and give zakah as long as he lives.

  4. Kindness to his mother

He said Allah made him dutiful to his mother, and not arrogant or wretched.

  5. Peace upon him

He said peace is upon him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he is raised.

Surah Maryam · 19:30

Lesson 4 · Miracles belong to Allah · ages 8-11

Signs, by Allah's permission

Isa healed the blind and gave life to the dead — and every single time, the Qur'an adds: by Allah's permission.

  1. Real miracles

He came with a sign from their Lord, and the Qur'an lists what he was given.

  2. The clay bird

He shaped a bird from clay and it became a bird by Allah's permission.

  3. Healing

He healed the blind and the leper by Allah's permission.

  4. Life returned

He gave life to the dead by Allah's permission.

  5. The key words

'By Allah's permission' is repeated so no one mistakes the messenger for the Lord.

Surah Aal-i-Imraan · 3:49

And I cure the blind and the leper, and I give life to the dead - by permission of Allah. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. Indeed in that is a sign for you, if you are believers.”

Lesson 5 · The line we never cross · ages 12-15

A servant, not a son

The Qur'an is clear and gentle: Isa is a great messenger and a servant of Allah. Allah does not have a son.

  1. Allah says it plainly

It is not for Allah to take a son; exalted is He.

  2. 'Be' and it was

The same ayah says when He decrees a matter He only says 'Be', and it is.

  3. Do not exaggerate

The People of the Book are told not to go to excess in their religion.

  4. Isa's own words

He said: 'Worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.'

  5. A messenger, honoured

The Qur'an calls Isa the Messenger of Allah and a word from Him — loved, and still a servant.

Lesson 6 · We make no difference between them · ages 12-15

Believing in every prophet

A Muslim believes in Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa and Muhammad ﷺ. We do not pick and choose between Allah's messengers.

  1. The list

The Qur'an names the prophets we believe in, including Isa, and what was revealed to them.

  2. No favourites

The ayah says: 'we make no distinction between any of them'.

  3. Same submission

It ends with 'and we are Muslims to Him' — the same surrender they all taught.

  4. Guidance came again and again

Allah says He revealed to Muhammad ﷺ as He revealed to Nuh and the prophets after him.

  5. Loving them is faith

Rejecting one messenger is not allowed; believing in all of them is part of iman.
