Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman and Ali

The four khalifahs

After the Prophet ﷺ died, four of his closest companions led the Muslims one after the other. Every lesson here quotes an authentic hadith with its collection and number, so you can check each story yourself. No person is pictured in any illustration.

Lesson 1 · The one who believed straight away · ages 5-7

Abu Bakr, the truthful friend

Abu Bakr was the Prophet's closest friend. He believed immediately and stood by him when it was hardest.

  1. The dearest companion

The Prophet ﷺ said that if he were to take a khalil (closest intimate friend) he would have taken Abu Bakr, but instead he is his brother and companion.

  2. He gave his wealth

He spent his money freely to free enslaved Muslims and to support the Prophet ﷺ.

  3. He led the prayer

In the Prophet's final illness he instructed that Abu Bakr lead the people in salah.

  4. He held the Muslims together

When the Prophet ﷺ died, Abu Bakr reminded everyone that Allah is alive and never dies.

  5. Loyalty is a quality

Being a true friend when it costs you something is part of Islam.

“If I were to take a Khalil, I would have taken Abu Bakr as such, but he is my brother and my companion (in Islam).”

Sahih al-Bukhari 3656

“Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 664

Lesson 2 · Strong, and afraid of Allah · ages 8-11

Umar and courage

Umar was famously strong and fearless, and he cried easily out of fear of Allah. Both together.

  1. Even Shaytan avoided his path

The Prophet ﷺ told Umar that when Shaytan sees him, he turns away from his road.

  2. The Prophet ﷺ made dua for him

The Prophet ﷺ asked Allah to strengthen Islam with the dearer of two men to Him — Abu Jahl or Umar — and Umar became Muslim.

  3. Courage with humility

As leader he lived simply, patched his own clothes, and answered ordinary people himself.

  4. He was strict with himself

The stories remembered about him are about him checking himself, not about him ordering others.

  5. Bravery has a direction

Being brave means standing for the truth, not being rough with people.

“By Him in Whose Hands my life is, whenever Satan sees you taking a path, he follows a path other than yours.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 3294

“O Allah, strengthen Islam with whichever of these two men is dearer to You, with Abu Jahl or with 'Umar bin Al-Khattab.”

Lesson 3 · Generous, and shy of Allah · ages 8-11

Uthman and modesty

Uthman was so modest that even the angels were shy of him, and so generous that he funded whole caravans.

  1. The angels felt shy of him

The Prophet ﷺ said about Uthman: should I not feel shy of a man of whom even the angels are shy?

  2. Modesty is part of faith

The Prophet ﷺ taught that haya (modesty) is a branch of faith, so being shy of wrong is a good sign.

  3. He gave enormously

He is remembered for spending generously to equip Muslim soldiers and for buying a well for the Muslims of Madinah.

  4. He gathered the Qur'an into one script

In his time the Qur'an was copied into one agreed written form and sent to the regions — that is the copy we read from today.

  5. Quiet people can carry huge work

You do not have to be loud to serve others.

“Should I not feel shy of a man of whom the angels feel shy?”

Sahih Muslim 2401

“Iman has over seventy branches, and modesty is a branch of Iman.”

Sahih Muslim 35

Lesson 4 · Loved by Allah and His Messenger · ages 12-15

Ali and knowledge

Ali grew up in the Prophet's household, learned deeply, and was given the flag on the Day of Khaibar with a dua for his eyes.

  1. The flag on the Day of Khaibar

On the Day of Khaibar, the Prophet ﷺ said he would give the flag to a man whom Allah and His Messenger love, and he called for Ali.

  2. A dua for his eyes

Ali's eyes were sore, so the Prophet ﷺ applied his saliva to them and made dua, and the pain went.

  3. Invite before you fight

The Prophet ﷺ told Ali to invite them to Islam first, and that guiding one person is better than valuable camels.

  4. He judged and taught

The companions turned to him for guidance and understanding.

  5. Love is earned by obedience

The hadith praises Ali because Allah loves him — that is the honour worth wanting.

“On the Day of Khaibar, Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: Tomorrow I will give the flag to a man through whom Allah will grant victory, a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and who is loved by Allah and His Messenger.”

Sahih Muslim 2405

“Proceed on and do not be hasty. When you reach their land, invite them to Islam and inform them of their duties towards Allah. By Allah, if a single man is guided by Allah through you, it will be better for you than possessing red camels.”

Sahih Muslim 2406

Lesson 5 · Shura, not showing off · ages 12-15

Leaders who asked others

The khalifahs were told to consult, be gentle and forgive — the Qur'an describes this before any of them led.

  1. Consult them

Allah told the Prophet ﷺ to pardon them, ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the matter.

  2. Gentleness first

The same ayah says that had he been harsh-hearted, they would have scattered away from him.

  3. Believers consult

Allah describes the believers as those who conduct their affairs by mutual consultation.

  4. Then decide and trust Allah

After consulting, the ayah says: then when you have decided, rely upon Allah.

  5. Leadership is service

Umar and the others asked ordinary Muslims for advice and were corrected publicly without punishing anyone.

Surah Aal-i-Imraan · 3:159

“So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].”

Surah Ash-Shura · 42:38

“And those who have responded to their lord and established prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them, they spend.”

Lesson 6 · Why we still study them · ages 12-15

Hold on to what they held

The Prophet ﷺ told us to hold on to his Sunnah and the way of the rightly guided khalifahs — that is why their example matters.

  1. The instruction

He ﷺ said: hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided khalifahs after me.

  2. The best generation

He ﷺ said the best of people are his generation, then those after them, then those after them.

  3. They were normal people

They made mistakes, apologised, and were corrected — which is why we can actually follow them.

  4. Love them all

Speaking well of all the companions is part of the manners of Ahl as-Sunnah.

  5. Follow, don't just admire

Reading about them without copying one habit of theirs changes nothing.

“I enjoin you to fear Allah, and to obey, even if he be an Abyssinian slave, for those of you who live after me will see great disagreement. You must then follow my Sunnah and that of the rightly-guided caliphs.”

Sunan Abi Dawud 4607

“The best of my nation are my contemporaries (i.e., the present generation), then will come those who will follow (visit) them, then will come those who will follow the latter.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 2652
