Courage, dua and trust

Musa and the way out

Musa is mentioned in the Qur'an more than any other prophet, and his story is mostly about being afraid and trusting Allah anyway. These lessons follow the Qur'anic account only — Surah Ta-Ha, al-Qasas, ash-Shu'ara and al-Kahf — with each ayah shown from the verified Uthmani text.

Lesson 1 · Trusting Allah with what you love · ages 5-7

A baby in a basket

Musa's mother was told to place her baby in the river. Allah promised to bring him back to her, and He did.

  1. A frightening command

Allah inspired Musa's mother to put her baby in the river when it was not safe to keep him.

  2. The promise

Allah told her not to fear or grieve, because He would return the child to her.

  3. Allah watched over him

In Surah Ta-Ha, Allah tells Musa: 'And I bestowed upon you favour' — his rescue was never an accident.

  4. Tawakkul is doing, then trusting

She acted on what Allah told her, then left the outcome to Him.

  5. Allah keeps promises

The Qur'an says the promise came true so that she would know Allah's promise is true.

Surah Taa-Haa · 20:38

“[Saying], 'Cast him into the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will throw it onto the bank; there will take him an enemy to Me and an enemy to him.' And I bestowed upon you love from Me that you would be brought up under My eye.”

Surah Al-Qasas · 28:7

“And We inspired to the mother of Moses, "Suckle him; but when you fear for him, cast him into the river and do not fear and do not grieve. Indeed, We will return him to you and will make him [one] of the messengers."”

Lesson 2 · Allah places people where He wills · ages 5-7

Growing up in the palace

The baby was taken into the house of the very man who was hunting him. Pharaoh's wife asked for him to be kept, and Allah raised him there.

  1. A safe place inside danger

Pharaoh's wife said the child might benefit them and asked that he not be killed.

  2. They did not realise

The Qur'an notes they did not perceive what Allah was doing.

  3. Raised by the enemy's household

Later Pharaoh reminds Musa that he was brought up among them as a child.

  4. Allah's plan is bigger

The safest place for Musa was the last place anyone would have chosen.

  5. One good person matters

A single woman's kindness in that house changed the story.

Surah Al-Qasas · 28:9

“And the wife of Pharaoh said, "[He will be] a comfort of the eye for me and for you. Do not kill him; perhaps he may benefit us, or we may adopt him as a son." And they perceived not.”

Surah Ash-Shu'araa · 26:18

Lesson 3 · Rabbi ishrah li sadri · ages 8-11

The dua before speaking

Before facing Pharaoh, Musa asked Allah to open his chest, make his task easy and untie his tongue. Then Allah told him to speak gently.

  1. He asked for calm first

Musa's dua begins with 'my Lord, expand for me my chest' — courage before words.

  2. Make it easy for me

He asked Allah to ease his task rather than asking for it to be removed.

  3. Untie my tongue

He asked to be understood clearly, which is a dua any nervous child can make.

  4. Speak gently

Allah told Musa and Harun to speak to Pharaoh with gentle words.

  5. Gentleness is not weakness

The hardest man on earth was still to be addressed politely.

Surah Taa-Haa · 20:24

Surah Taa-Haa · 20:44

Lesson 4 · 'Indeed, my Lord is with me' · ages 8-11

The staff and the sea

Trapped between Pharaoh's army and the sea, Musa said his Lord was with him and would guide him — and Allah opened a path.

  1. No way out on paper

His people said they were about to be overtaken; the situation looked finished.

  2. His answer

Musa said: 'No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me.'

  3. Then the command came

Allah told him to strike the sea with his staff, and it parted.

  4. Certainty first, help second

The rescue came after the trust, not before it.

  5. Say it when you are stuck

'Inna ma'iya Rabbi' is a sentence a child can hold on to in a hard moment.

Surah Ash-Shu'araa · 26:53

Lesson 5 · Asking for a helper · ages 8-11

Musa and Harun together

Musa asked Allah for his brother Harun to be sent with him, so that together they could remember Allah more. Allah granted it.

  1. He asked for support

Musa asked Allah to appoint his brother Harun as a helper in his task.

  2. Why

He said it so that they might glorify and remember Allah much together.

  3. Allah answered

The surah records Allah's reply: 'You have been granted your request, O Musa.'

  4. Strength in pairs

Even a prophet did not want to carry the work alone.

  5. Siblings as allies

The pair in this story are brothers — the first team Allah gives most children.

Surah Taa-Haa · 20:29

Lesson 6 · Even Musa was a student · ages 12-15

Learning patience with knowledge

In Surah al-Kahf, Musa travels to learn from a servant of Allah who had been given knowledge — and is told he will need patience.

  1. A prophet as a learner

Musa asked to follow a servant of Allah so he could be taught what he did not know.

  2. The condition

He was told: you will not be able to have patience with me.

  3. Things looked wrong at first

Events happened that Musa objected to before their reasons were explained.

  4. Allah's knowledge is wider

The Qur'an gives this story so we accept that Allah knows what we cannot yet see.

  5. Adab with teachers

Asking questions is fine; assuming your teacher is wrong is not.

Surah Al-Kahf · 18:65

“And they found a servant from among Our servants to whom we had given mercy from us and had taught him from Us a [certain] knowledge.”

Surah Al-Kahf · 18:66

Surah Al-Kahf · 18:69
