Ramadan is the month the Qur'an was sent down, and fasting in it is one of the five pillars. These lessons take a child through the whole month in order — the night it begins, the meal before dawn, the manners that make a fast worth keeping, the long nights of prayer, the search for Laylat al-Qadr, and the giving that comes right before Eid. Children who are too young to fast a full day still learn every part of it and join in what they can.
Lesson 1 · The month begins · ages 8-11
Why we fast
Fasting was written for the believers before us too, and Allah tells us the reason in one word: taqwa — so that we become careful of Him.
1It is a command with a reason
Allah says fasting was prescribed for those before us, so that we may become people of taqwa — aware that Allah sees us even when nobody else does.
2The month of the Qur'an
Ramadan is named in the Qur'an as the month in which the Qur'an was sent down as guidance for people.
3What fasting means
From the light of dawn until sunset we do not eat or drink at all, and we guard our tongue and eyes as well.
4A month with the doors open
The Prophet ﷺ said that when Ramadan starts the gates of heaven are opened, the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained.
5Children build up slowly
Fasting becomes obligatory at puberty. Before that, a child fasts part of a day or a whole day now and then, so the habit is ready when the duty comes.
Shahru Ramadaanallazeee unzila feehil Qur'aanu hudal linnaasi wa baiyinaatim minal hudaa wal furqaan; faman shahida minkumush shahra falyasumhu wa man kaana mareedan aw 'alaa safarin fa'iddatum min ayyaamin ukhar; yureedul laahu bikumul yusra wa laa yureedu bikumul 'usra wa litukmilul 'iddata wa litukabbirul laaha 'alaa maa hadaakum wa la'allakum tashkuroon
“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.”
“When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of the heaven are opened and the gates of Hell are closed and the devils are chained.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1899
Do this before next time
Ask your family which night Ramadan starts this year, and write down one thing you want to do every day of it.
Lesson 2 · The two meals · ages 5-7
Suhoor and iftar
The fasting day has two ends: suhoor before the dawn, and iftar the moment the sun sets. Both of them are sunnah, and both are blessed.
1Eat before dawn
The Prophet ﷺ said: take suhoor, for there is a blessing in it. Even a few dates and water count.
2Stop when dawn comes
The Qur'an marks the start of the fast at the first white thread of dawn, which is the time of Fajr.
3Break the fast quickly
The Prophet ﷺ said people stay on the right path as long as they hasten to break the fast — at sunset we eat straight away, we do not delay.
4Break it simply
Dates and water first, then salah, then the meal. Iftar is not meant to be a competition of food.
5The night is for eating
Allah made the whole night halal for eating and drinking, so nobody has to go hungry for two days in a row.
Uhilla lakum laylatas Siyaamir rafasu ilaa nisaaa'ikum; hunna libaasullakum wa antum libaasullahunn; 'alimal laahu annakum kuntum takhtaanoona anfusakum fataaba 'alaikum wa 'afaa 'ankum fal'aana baashiroo hunna wabtaghoo maa katabal laahoo lakum; wa kuloo washraboo hattaa yatabaiyana lakumul khaitul abyadu minal khaitil aswadi minal fajri summa atimmus Siyaama ilal layl; wa laa tubaashiroo hunna wa antum 'aakifoona fil masaajid; tilka hudoodul laahi falaa taqraboohaa; kazaalika yubaiyinul laahu aayaatihee linnaasi la'allahum yattaqoon
“It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives [for sexual relations]. They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them. Allah knows that you used to deceive yourselves, so He accepted your repentance and forgave you. So now, have relations with them and seek that which Allah has decreed for you. And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night]. Then complete the fast until the sunset. And do not have relations with them as long as you are staying for worship in the mosques. These are the limits [set by] Allah, so do not approach them. Thus does Allah make clear His ordinances to the people that they may become righteous.”
“Take Suhur as there is a blessing in it.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1923
“The people will remain on the right path as long as they hasten the breaking of the fast.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1957
Do this before next time
Help lay the table for iftar one evening, and put out the dates and water before anything else.
Lesson 3 · Guarding the fast · ages 8-11
Fasting is not only about food
A fast can be broken by the mouth in two ways: by eating, and by speaking badly. The Prophet ﷺ warned about the second one clearly.
1The warning
The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever does not give up false speech and evil actions — Allah has no need of him leaving his food and drink.
2So what do we give up?
Lying, insults, shouting at brothers and sisters, backbiting, and the screens and games that make us forget salah.
3Keep your temper
Hunger makes people short-tempered, so Ramadan is exactly the month to practise answering gently.
4Fill the gap with good
Time not spent eating is spent on Qur'an, dua and helping at home — otherwise the day just feels empty.
5If you slip
Say astaghfirullah, do not give up the fast, and keep going. A mistake does not cancel the month.
“Whoever does not give up forged speech and evil actions, Allah is not in need of his leaving his food and drink.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1903
Do this before next time
Pick the one habit that spoils your day the most and leave it for the whole of Ramadan.
Lesson 4 · The nights · ages 8-11
Taraweeh and the Qur'an
In Ramadan the nights are for standing in prayer and listening to the Qur'an being recited from beginning to end.
1Qiyam Ramadan
The Prophet ﷺ said whoever stands in prayer during the nights of Ramadan out of faith, hoping for reward, is forgiven his past sins.
2It is voluntary
Taraweeh is a sunnah prayer, not a pillar — a child can pray a few rak'ahs and go to bed without any guilt.
3Listen for the whole Qur'an
Many masjids recite about one juz a night so the entire Qur'an is heard by the end of the month.
4Follow along
Take your own mushaf and find the surah being recited — you will soon recognise the short surahs you know well.
5Sleep matters too
Praying all night and being unable to fast or go to school the next day is not the sunnah.
“Whoever establishes prayers during the nights of Ramadan faithfully out of sincere faith and hoping to attain Allah's rewards, all his past sins will be forgiven.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 37
Do this before next time
Go to taraweeh once this week and count how many rak'ahs you managed with the imam.
Lesson 5 · The best night of the year · ages 12-15
Laylat al-Qadr
One night in Ramadan is better than a thousand months. It is hidden in the last ten nights so that we look for it in all of them.
1Better than a thousand months
Surah al-Qadr says this night is better than a thousand months, and that the angels and Jibril descend in it by the permission of their Lord.
2Where to look
The Prophet ﷺ told us to search for it in the odd nights of the last ten nights of Ramadan.
3Why it is hidden
If we knew the date we would worship one night and sleep through nine. Hiding it makes us serious about all ten.
4What to do in it
Salah, Qur'an, dua and asking forgiveness — this is a night for asking, not for staying up doing nothing.
5It ends with peace
The surah ends by describing the night as peace until the rising of the dawn.
Tanaz zalul malaa-ikatu war roohu feeha bi izni-rab bihim min kulli amr
“The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter.”
Surah Al-Qadr · 97:5
سَلَٰمٌ هِىَ حَتَّىٰ مَطْلَعِ ٱلْفَجْرِ
Salaamun hiya hattaa mat la'il fajr
“Peace it is until the emergence of dawn.”
“Search for the Night of Qadr in the odd nights of the last ten days of Ramadan.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 2017
Do this before next time
Write down three duas you will make on every odd night of the last ten, and keep the list by your bed.
Lesson 6 · Before Eid · ages 8-11
Zakat al-Fitr
Before the Eid prayer, every Muslim gives food away — young, old, boy, girl — so that nobody in the town is hungry on Eid day.
1What is given
The Prophet ﷺ made it a duty of one sa' of dates or barley — a measure of staple food — on every Muslim.
2Who gives it
Every Muslim: slave or free, male or female, young or old. Parents pay it for their small children.
3When it is given
He ﷺ ordered that it be paid before the people go out to the Eid prayer.
4Why it exists
So the poor eat on Eid like everyone else, and so the fasting person's month is rounded off with giving.
5Money or food
Scholars differ on paying its value in money; families follow the guidance of their local scholars.
“Allah's Messenger ﷺ enjoined the payment of one Sa' of dates or one Sa' of barley as Zakat-ul-Fitr on every Muslim, slave or free, male or female, young or old, and he ordered that it be paid before the people went out to offer the Eid prayer.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1503
Do this before next time
Ask a parent how your family pays Zakat al-Fitr this year, and help carry or send it before Eid morning.
Lesson 7 · The reward day · ages 5-7
Eid al-Fitr
Eid is not just sweets and new clothes. It starts with eating a few dates, then the Eid prayer, then visiting people.
1Eat before you go
Anas said the Prophet ﷺ never went out on the day of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates — and he ﷺ used to eat an odd number.
2Then the prayer
The Eid prayer comes in the morning, in a big gathering, with a khutbah after it.
3Say takbir
On the way we say Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illa Allah — thanking Allah for helping us finish the month.
4Include everybody
Eid is the day to invite the neighbour with nobody to visit and the child with no gift.
5Fasting is finished
On Eid day nobody fasts — that is part of the celebration Allah gave us.
“Allah's Messenger ﷺ never proceeded for the prayer on the Day of Eid-ul-Fitr unless he had eaten some dates; he used to eat an odd number of dates.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 953
Memorise this
تَقَبَّلَ اللَّهُ مِنَّا وَمِنْكُمْ
Taqabbal-Allahu minna wa minkum
May Allah accept it from us and from you.
