Every worshipper loses count, forgets a rak'ah, or finds their mind drifting. The Prophet ﷺ taught clear, calm answers for all of it — including the two extra prostrations known as sujud al-sahw — and he himself said, 'I am a human being like you; I forget as you forget.' A child who knows the fix stops fearing prayer. Each lesson below carries its hadith with collection and number.
Lesson 1 · Three or four? · ages 8-11
When you lose count
If you are unsure whether you prayed three or four, build on what you are sure of, then make two prostrations before you finish.
1The rule
The Prophet ﷺ said if one of you doubts in his prayer and does not know how many he prayed, he should take the smaller number he is certain about and then make two prostrations before finishing.
2Why the smaller number
You are certain about three, unsure about four — so count three and add one. Certainty beats guessing.
3Do not restart
You do not begin the whole prayer again. Shaytan wants you tired of praying; the fix is short.
4It happens to everyone
The Prophet ﷺ said he is a human who forgets like we forget, so he taught us the remedy.
5Stay calm
No panic, no talking, no walking away. Finish properly, then move on.
“They who are during their prayer humbly submissive”
“When one of you is in doubt about his prayer and does not know how much he has prayed, three or four (rak'ahs), he should cast aside his doubt and base his prayer on what he is sure of, then perform two prostrations before giving the salutation.”
Sahih Muslim 571a
Do this before next time
Ask a parent to test you: 'You think you prayed three of four — what do you do?' Answer it out loud.
Lesson 2 · Sujud al-sahw · ages 8-11
The two prostrations of forgetfulness
Two extra sajdahs repair a forgotten part of salah — the Prophet ﷺ did them himself and taught us to copy him.
1What happened
The Prophet ﷺ once prayed and gave salam after two rak'ah of a four-rak'ah prayer. When it was pointed out, he completed the prayer and then made two prostrations.
2How to do them
After the final sitting, make two normal sajdahs with takbir, sitting between them, then give salam.
3When they are used
For forgetting an action such as the first sitting, or for doubt about the count — not for a wandering mind.
4He said it plainly
He said, 'I am a human being like you; I forget as you forget, so when I forget, remind me.'
5No shame in it
Sujud al-sahw is not a punishment. It is Allah's mercy built into worship.
Laa yukalliful-laahu nafsan illaa wus'ahaa; lahaa maa kasabat wa 'alaihaa maktasabat; Rabbanaa la tu'aakhiznaa in naseenaaa aw akhtaanaa; Rabbanaa wa laa tahmil-'alainaaa isran kamaa hamaltahoo 'alal-lazeena min qablinaa; Rabbanaa wa laa tuhammilnaa maa laa taaqata lanaa bih wa'fu 'annaa waghfir lanaa warhamnaa; Anta mawlaanaa fansurnaa 'alal qawmil kaafireen
“Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity. It will have [the consequence of] what [good] it has gained, and it will bear [the consequence of] what [evil] it has earned. "Our Lord, do not impose blame upon us if we have forgotten or erred. Our Lord, and lay not upon us a burden like that which You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, and burden us not with that which we have no ability to bear. And pardon us; and forgive us; and have mercy upon us. You are our protector, so give us victory over the disbelieving people."”
“I am a human being like you; I forget as you forget, so when I forget, remind me.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 401
“The Prophet (ﷺ) prayed two rak`at of Zuhr instead of four and then he got up... Then he offered two prostrations (of Sahu) and then got up.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1229
Do this before next time
Practise the two prostrations after a nafl prayer today so your body knows the movement.
Lesson 3 · Sitting and lying down · ages 5-7
Praying when you are ill
If you cannot stand, pray sitting; if you cannot sit, pray lying on your side. Salah is never simply skipped.
1The instruction
The Prophet ﷺ told Imran ibn Husayn to pray standing; if he could not, then sitting; and if he could not, then on his side.
2Do what you can
Allah does not burden a person beyond what they can bear. Bow and prostrate with your head or your intention if your body cannot.
3Reward is not reduced
Someone who used to do good and is then stopped by illness or travel is still recorded for what they used to do.
4Ask for help
It is fine to ask a parent for a chair, a cushion, or a clean place to pray.
5Never skip it
Illness changes the shape of the prayer, not whether you pray.

“And strive for Allah with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty. [It is] the religion of your father, Abraham. Allah named you "Muslims" before [in former scriptures] and in this [revelation] that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over the people. So establish prayer and give zakah and hold fast to Allah. He is your protector; and excellent is the protector, and excellent is the helper.”
“Pray while standing and if you can't, pray while sitting and if you cannot do even that, then pray lying on your side.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1117
Do this before next time
Pray one sunnah prayer sitting today so you know exactly how it is done before you ever need it.
Lesson 4 · Shortened, not skipped · ages 12-15
Prayer on a journey
On a journey, Zuhr, Asr and Isha are prayed as two rak'ah — a gift from Allah, not a loophole.
1The Sunnah
Ibn Umar said he accompanied the Prophet ﷺ and he never prayed more than two rak'ah on a journey, and Abu Bakr, Umar and Uthman were the same.
2Which prayers
The longer prayers (Zuhr, Asr, Isha) are shortened when travelling. Fajr and Maghrib keep their usual length.
3A charity from Allah
The Qur'an mentions shortening prayer when travelling; the Prophet ﷺ called it a charity Allah gave, so accept it.
4Direction and cleanliness
Face the direction of prayer as best you can and use tayammum only when water is truly unavailable.
5Ask a parent
The details of distance and staying over are decided by scholars; ask a trusted teacher for your situation.
Wa izaa darabtum fil ardi falaisa 'alaikum junaahun an taqsuroo minas Salaati in khiftum ai yaftinakumul lazeena kafarooo; innal kaafireena kaanoo lakum aduwwam mubeenaa
“And when you travel throughout the land, there is no blame upon you for shortening the prayer, [especially] if you fear that those who disbelieve may disrupt [or attack] you. Indeed, the disbelievers are ever to you a clear enemy.”
“I accompanied the Prophet (ﷺ) and he never offered more than two rak`at during the journey. Abu Bakr, `Umar and `Uthman used to do the same.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1102
Do this before next time
On your next long car journey, plan out loud with a parent where and when you will pray.
Lesson 5 · Bringing the heart back · ages 12-15
When your mind wanders
Wandering thoughts in salah are normal. You do not restart the prayer; you turn back to Allah and seek refuge from the whispering.
1It is a known problem
A companion complained that Shaytan was confusing his prayer and recitation; the Prophet ﷺ told him to seek refuge in Allah and spit lightly to his left.
2No restarting
Distraction does not break salah and does not need sujud al-sahw. Bring your attention back and continue.
3Prepare before you start
Put the phone away, use the toilet first, choose a quiet spot facing a plain wall. The Prophet ﷺ warned against praying while distracted by hunger or need.
4Understand the words
Learning what Al-Fatihah means is the strongest cure — you cannot drift from a conversation you follow.
5Keep trying
The believers described as successful in the Qur'an are those humbly focused in prayer. It grows with practice, not in one day.
“They who are during their prayer humbly submissive”
“Uthman b. Abu al-'As reported: I said: Messenger of Allah, the Satan intervenes between me and my prayer and my recitation of the Qur'an and he confounds me. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: That is a devil called Khinzab, and when you perceive its effect, seek refuge with Allah from it and spit three times to your left side.”
Sahih Muslim 2203a
Do this before next time
Before your next salah, remove one distraction from the room, then try to follow every word of Al-Fatihah.
