Allah commands the believers to send blessings and peace upon His Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ told us exactly what happens when we do: one salawat from you brings ten from Allah. When his companions asked him how to say it, he taught them the words we still recite in every salah. He said the people closest to him on the Day of Judgement will be those who sent the most salawat, called the person who hears his name and stays silent stingy, and asked us to send abundant salawat on Fridays. Five lessons, every one tied to a verified ayah or hadith.
Lesson 1 · The best exchange · ages 5-7
Say it once, get ten
Whoever sends blessings on the Prophet ﷺ once, Allah sends blessings on him ten times.
1The hadith
Abu Hurayra reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'He who blesses me once, Allah would bless him ten times.'
2The short version
You can simply say 'sallallahu alayhi wa sallam' — peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
3Allah asked us to
Allah tells the believers that He and His angels send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ, and orders the believers to do the same.
4Whenever you hear his name
In a lesson, a khutbah, a nasheed or a book — that is your cue to say it.
5A dua that never fails
Scholars point out this is one dua you know is accepted, because Allah Himself commanded it.
Innal laaha wa malaaa'i katahoo yusalloona 'alan Nabiyy; yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo salloo 'alaihi wa sallimoo tasleemaa
“Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.”
Huwal lazee yusallee 'alaikum wa malaaa'ikatuhoo liyukhrijakum minazzulumaati ilan-noor wa kaana bilmu'mineena Raheemaa
“It is He who confers blessing upon you, and His angels [ask Him to do so] that He may bring you out from darknesses into the light. And ever is He, to the believers, Merciful.”
“He who blesses me once, Allah would bless him ten times.”
Sahih Muslim 408
Do this before next time
Count how many times you hear the Prophet's ﷺ name today and say salawat every single time.
Lesson 2 · Durud in salah · ages 8-11
The words he taught us
The companions asked how to send blessings on him, and he ﷺ gave them the exact wording we say in every prayer.
1The hadith
Ka'b ibn Ujrah reported that they asked the Prophet ﷺ how to send blessings on him, and he taught them: 'O Allah, send Your mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your mercy on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim; You are the Most Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah, send Your blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your blessings on Ibrahim and on the family of Ibrahim; You are the Most Praiseworthy, the Most Glorious.'
2You already say it
This is the durud you recite sitting in the last rak'ah, straight after at-tahiyyat.
3Ask before you assume
Notice how they asked rather than inventing wording. That is how our deen is learned — from him ﷺ, not from guesswork.
4Ibrahim is in it
The dua links our Prophet ﷺ to Ibrahim عليه السلام — one family of prophets, one message.
5Learn it properly
Recite it slowly with a tutor who has Tajweed certification until every word is clear.
Qul in kuntum tuhibboonal laaha fattabi' oonee yuhbibkumul laahu wa yaghfir lakum zunoobakum; wallaahu Ghafoorur Raheem
“Say, [O Muhammad], "If you should love Allah, then follow me, [so] Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."”
“Say: O Allah! Send Your Mercy on Muhammad and on the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Mercy on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious. O Allah! Send Your Blessings on Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You sent Your Blessings on Abraham and on the family of Abraham, for You are the Most Praise-worthy, the Most Glorious.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 3370
Do this before next time
Recite the full durud out loud three times and check your pronunciation with a parent or tutor.
Lesson 3 · Who stands nearest · ages 12-15
Closest to him on the Day
The person nearest to the Prophet ﷺ on the Day of Judgement is the one who sent the most salawat upon him.
1The hadith
Abdullah ibn Mas'ud reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The person closest to me on the Day of Judgement is the one who sent the most salat upon me.'
2Love is measured in habits
You cannot see love, but you can count salawat. The hadith turns love into something you can actually practise.
3Quantity is invited
'The most' means there is no limit — walking, waiting, before sleeping, all of it counts.
4Follow him too
Allah says if you love Allah, follow the Prophet ﷺ; salawat and sunnah belong together.
5Graded hasan
This narration is graded hasan in Jami' at-Tirmidhi — we tell you the grade rather than hide it.
Man yuti'ir Rasoola faqad ataa'al laaha wa man tawallaa famaaa arsalnaaka 'alaihim hafeezaa
“He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah; but those who turn away - We have not sent you over them as a guardian.”
“The person closest to me on the Day of Judgement is the one who sent the most Salat upon me.”
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 484
Do this before next time
Set a target of one hundred salawat today and split it across your five prayers.
Lesson 4 · A warning with love · ages 8-11
Don't be the stingy one
The Prophet ﷺ called the person stingy who hears his name mentioned and does not send salawat.
1The hadith
Ali ibn Abi Talib reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The stingy person is the one before whom I am mentioned, and he does not send salat upon me.'
2Stingy with what?
Not money — words. It costs you one second, so keeping it back really is miserly.
3Say it out loud
Whispering is fine, but saying it clearly helps everyone around you remember too.
4Not only in lessons
In a du'a, in a story, on a poster in the masjid — his name is a reminder, not just information.
5Graded hasan sahih
Tirmidhi records this as hasan sahih gharib, so it is strong enough to act upon.
Surah Al-Qalam · 68:4
وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍۢ
Wa innaka la'alaa khuluqin 'azeem
“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”
“The stingy person is the one before whom I am mentioned, and he does not send Salat upon me.”
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3546
Do this before next time
Practise saying salawat clearly every time his ﷺ name comes up in today's lessons at home or madrasah.
Lesson 5 · The best day · ages 12-15
Abundant on Friday
Friday is among the most excellent of days, and the Prophet ﷺ asked us to send abundant salawat on it.
1The hadith
Aws ibn Aws reported the Prophet ﷺ said Friday is among the most excellent of your days — on it Adam was created, on it he died, on it the trumpet will be blown — so send abundant blessings on him that day, for your blessings are presented to him.
2Presented to him
The same hadith says our salawat are brought to him ﷺ, and that Allah has protected the bodies of the prophets from decay.
3Make it a routine
Pick a fixed slot every Friday — after Fajr, or while you walk to Jumu'ah — and repeat salawat there weekly.
4Pairs with Jumu'ah adab
Ghusl, clean clothes, early arrival and salawat belong to the same day; see the Jumu'ah module for the rest.
5Sunan Abi Dawud
This narration can be checked on sunnah.com like every source we use.
“O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.”
“Among the most excellent of your days is Friday... so invoke more blessings on me that day, for your blessings will be submitted to me.”
Sunan Abi Dawud 1047
