Honesty is worship

Shu'ayb and the honest scales

Allah sent Shu'ayb to Madyan, a people who worshipped others besides Allah and cheated the measure and the scale. His message joined the two things together: worship Allah alone, and be fair when you weigh. These lessons stay inside the Qur'anic account, with every ayah shown from the verified Uthmani text.

Lesson 1 · One message, two halves · ages 5-7

The people who cheated the scales

Allah sent Shu'ayb to Madyan. They were doing well, and they still cheated when they measured and weighed. Shu'ayb told them to worship Allah and to give people their full due.

  1. Their brother Shu'ayb

The Qur'an says: and to Madyan We sent their brother Shu'ayb — a messenger from among their own people.

  2. Worship Allah first

He said: O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him.

  3. Fill the measure fairly

He told them to fulfill the measure and weight and not to deprive people of their due.

  4. They were not poor

Shu'ayb said: indeed, I see you in prosperity — they had plenty, and cheated anyway.

  5. A warning out of care

He said he feared for them the punishment of an all-encompassing Day.

Surah Al-A'raaf · 7:85

“And to [the people of] Madyan [We sent] their brother Shu'ayb. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. There has come to you clear evidence from your Lord. So fulfill the measure and weight and do not deprive people of their due and cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. That is better for you, if you should be believers.”

Surah Hud · 11:84

“And to Madyan [We sent] their brother Shu'ayb. He said, "O my people, worship Allah; you have no deity other than Him. And do not decrease from the measure and the scale. Indeed, I see you in prosperity, but indeed, I fear for you the punishment of an all-encompassing Day.”

The honest little is better

Cheating can make the pile look bigger. Shu'ayb taught that what remains with Allah — the honest earning — is better. The Prophet ﷺ taught the same thing at a heap of grain.

  1. Full measure, in justice

Shu'ayb said: give full measure and weight in justice and do not deprive the people of their due.

  2. What remains from Allah

He said: what remains from Allah is best for you, if you would be believers.

  3. Your choice, your answer

He added: I am not a guardian over you — nobody can be forced into honesty; it has to be chosen.

  4. The wet grain

The Prophet ﷺ put his hand into a heap of food for sale and found it wet inside, where buyers could not see.

  5. Show what is really there

He told the seller to put the drenched part on top so people could see it: he who deceives is not of me.

Surah Hud · 11:85

Wa yaa qawmi awful mikyaala walmeezaana bilqisti wa laa tabkhasun naasa ashyaaa'ahum wa laa ta'saw fil ardi mufsideen

“And O my people, give full measure and weight in justice and do not deprive the people of their due and do not commit abuse on the earth, spreading corruption.”

Surah Hud · 11:86

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) happened to pass by a heap of eatables. He thrust his hand in that heap and his fingers were moistened. He said to the owner: What is this? He replied: Messenger of Allah, these have been drenched by rainfall. He remarked: Why did you not place this over other eatables so that the people could see it? He who deceives is not of me.”

Lesson 3 · Prayer that changes weekdays · ages 8-11

“Does your salah command you?”

Madyan mocked Shu'ayb: does your prayer tell you what we may do with our money? They thought worship and money lived in separate boxes. Shu'ayb showed they do not.

  1. The mocking question

They said: O Shu'ayb, does your prayer command you that we should leave what our fathers worship, or not do with our wealth what we please?

  2. Salah reaches the scales

Their question told the truth by accident: real prayer does shape what your hands do with money.

  3. He lived his own message

Shu'ayb said he did not intend to differ from them in that which he had forbidden them — he would never cheat and then preach honesty.

  4. Reform, not power

He said: I only intend reform as much as I am able.

  5. Success is from Allah

He said: my success is not but through Allah; upon Him I have relied, and to Him I return.

Surah Hud · 11:87

Lesson 4 · Amanah at the balance · ages 5-7

A trustworthy messenger

In Surah ash-Shu'ara, Shu'ayb's call is short and clear: will you not fear Allah? I am to you a trustworthy messenger. Weigh with an even balance.

  1. Will you not fear Allah?

Shu'ayb asked: will you not fear Allah? That is the question behind every honest choice.

  2. A trustworthy messenger

He said: indeed, I am to you a trustworthy messenger.

  3. An even balance

He said: give full measure and do not be of those who cause loss, and weigh with an even balance.

  4. Mercy on the easy-going

The Prophet ﷺ prayed for Allah's mercy on the person who is lenient when buying, selling and asking for money back.

Lesson 5 · Standing firm when threatened · ages 12-15

“We see you as weak”

When words failed, Madyan's chiefs turned to threats: leave our city or return to our religion. Shu'ayb answered threats with reliance on Allah.

  1. The ultimatum

The arrogant chiefs said: we will surely evict you, O Shu'ayb, and those who have believed with you from our city, or you must return to our religion.

  2. Even if unwilling?

Shu'ayb answered: even if we were unwilling? Faith forced is not faith at all.

  3. No going back

He said: we would have invented against Allah a lie if we returned to your religion after Allah had saved us from it.

  4. Only his clan shielded him

They said: we consider you among us as weak, and if not for your family, we would have stoned you.

  5. Mightier than Allah?

He answered: is my family more respected for power by you than Allah? — while they put Allah behind their backs.

Surah Al-A'raaf · 7:88

Who the losers really were

The chiefs warned that anyone who followed Shu'ayb would be a loser. Allah's answer used their own word: those who denied Shu'ayb — they were the losers.

  1. Their prediction

The disbelieving chiefs said: if you should follow Shu'ayb, indeed, you would then be losers.

  2. The earthquake

Surah al-A'raf says the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home fallen prone.

  3. The shriek

Surah Hud says the shriek seized those who had wronged — and Allah saved Shu'ayb and those who believed with him, by mercy from Him.

  4. Their own word returned

Allah says: those who denied Shu'ayb — it was they who were the losers.

  5. A duty completed

Shu'ayb turned away and said: O my people, I had certainly conveyed to you the messages of my Lord and advised you.
