Allah calls the story of Yusuf 'the best of stories', and He tells it in one place — Surah Yusuf. That makes it the perfect story for a child to study carefully, because every part of it can be pointed to in the Qur'an. These lessons stay inside the surah: nothing is added, and every ayah shown here is taken from the verified Uthmani text.
Lesson 1 · Keeping something to yourself · ages 5-7
The dream of eleven stars
Yusuf, still a boy, dreamt that eleven stars, the sun and the moon bowed to him. His father Ya'qub told him to keep the dream to himself.
1The dream
Yusuf told his father he had seen eleven stars, the sun and the moon prostrating to him.
2Wise advice
Ya'qub told him not to tell his brothers about it, because of what they might plan.
3Not everything is shared
Good news about yourself does not always need an audience.
4Allah chooses
The surah says Allah teaches and chooses whom He wills — the dream was a gift, not something Yusuf earned by boasting.
5Respect for parents
Yusuf listened to his father. The story begins with a boy who obeys.
Iz qaala Yoosufu li abeehi yaaa abati innee ra aytu ahada 'ashara kawkabanw wash shamsa walqamara ra aytuhum lee saajideen
“[Of these stories mention] when Joseph said to his father, "O my father, indeed I have seen [in a dream] eleven stars and the sun and the moon; I saw them prostrating to me."”
Falammaa zahaboo bihee wa ajma'ooo anyyaj'aloohu fee ghayaabatil jubb; wa awyainaaa ilaihi latunabbi 'annahum bi amrihim haaza wa hum laa yash'uroon
“So when they took him [out] and agreed to put him into the bottom of the well... But We inspired to him, "You will surely inform them [someday] about this affair of theirs while they do not perceive [your identity]."”
Wa jaaa'oo 'alaa qamee shihee bidamin kazi' qaala bal sawwalat lakum anfusukum amraa; fasabrun jameel; wallaahul musta'aanu 'alaa man tasifoon
“And they brought upon his shirt false blood. [Jacob] said, "Rather, your souls have enticed you to something, so patience is most fitting. And Allah is the one sought for help against that which you describe."”
Do this before next time
Next time something unfair happens, say 'Allah is enough for me' before you say anything else.
Lesson 3 · Choosing Allah over easy · ages 12-15
Saying no when it is hard
Yusuf was pushed to do something wrong in a house where he had no power. He refused, and told Allah he would rather be in prison than disobey Him.
1He said 'I seek refuge in Allah'
His first response to being pushed toward sin was to run to Allah, not to argue.
2Prison over sin
Yusuf prayed that prison was dearer to him than what he was being invited to.
3He asked for help
He did not trust his own strength; he asked Allah to turn the temptation away from him.
4Nobody was watching
There were no witnesses in the room — except Allah, and that was enough.
5It cost him years
Doing the right thing still landed him in prison. The surah does not pretend obedience is always easy.
Wa raawadat hul latee huwa fee baitihaa 'an nafsihee wa ghallaqatil abwaaba wa qaalat haita lak; qaala ma'aazal laahi innahoo rabbeee ahsana maswaay; innahoo laa yuflihuz-zaalimoon
“And she, in whose house he was, sought to seduce him. She closed the doors and said, "Come, you." He said, "[I seek] the refuge of Allah. Indeed, he is my master, who has made good my residence. Indeed, wrongdoers will not succeed."”
Qaala rabbis sijnu ahabbu ilaiya mimma yad'oo naneee 'ilaihi wa illaa tasrif 'annee kaidahunna asbu ilaihinna wa akum minal jaahileen
“He said, "My Lord, prison is more to my liking than that to which they invite me. And if You do not avert from me their plan, I might incline toward them and [thus] be of the ignorant."”
Do this before next time
Name one thing you know is wrong that you are tempted by, and make a dua asking Allah to keep you away from it.
Lesson 4 · Knowledge that serves people · ages 8-11
Seven years of grain
Years later Yusuf explained the king's dream — seven good years, then seven hard ones — and gave a plan to store food. He was put in charge of the land.
1The dream explained
Yusuf said they would farm seven years, then face seven hard years that would eat what they had stored.
2Advice, not just answers
He told them to keep back part of every harvest, so his knowledge came with a practical plan.
3From prison to responsibility
The surah records that Yusuf was given authority in the land after this.
4He was trusted
He was described as trustworthy and knowledgeable — character came before the position.
5Use what you learn
Knowledge in Islam is meant to feed people, not to make us feel clever.
Qaaloo 'a innaka la anta Yoosufu qaala ana Yoosufu wa haazaaa akhee qad mannal laahu 'alainaa innahoo mai yattaqi wa yasbir fa innal laaha laa yudee'u ajral muhsineen
“They said, "Are you indeed Joseph?" He said "I am Joseph, and this is my brother. Allah has certainly favored us. Indeed, he who fears Allah and is patient, then indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of those who do good."”
Yaa baniyyaz haboo fatahassasoo miny Yoosufa wa akheehi wa laa tai'asoo mir rawhil laahi innahoo laa yai'asu mir rawhil laahi illal qawmul kaafiroon
“O my sons, go and find out about Joseph and his brother and despair not of relief from Allah. Indeed, no one despairs of relief from Allah except the disbelieving people."”
Rabbi qad aataitanee minal mulki wa 'allamtanee min taaweelil ahaadees; faati ras samaawaati wal ardi Anta waliyyee fid dunyaa wal Aakhirati tawaffanee muslimanw wa alhiqnee bissaaliheen
“My Lord, You have given me [something] of sovereignty and taught me of the interpretation of dreams. Creator of the heavens and earth, You are my protector in this world and in the Hereafter. Cause me to die a Muslim and join me with the righteous."”
