Al-Asma al-Husna

The names of Allah

A child who only learns rules learns half of Islam. The other half is knowing Who the rules come from. Allah told us about Himself using His own beautiful names, and the Prophet ﷺ said whoever takes them in and lives by them enters Paradise. Each lesson here takes one name, shows the ayah it comes from, and turns it into something a child can feel: that they are heard, provided for, and always able to come back.

Lesson 1 · Al-Asma al-Husna · ages 8-11

The most beautiful names

Allah has the most beautiful names, and He told us to call on Him by them. Learning them is learning Him.

  1. Call Him by them

Allah says the most beautiful names belong to Him, so call upon Him by them — dua is meant to use His names.

  2. Ninety-nine

The Prophet ﷺ said Allah has ninety-nine names, and whoever takes them in enters Paradise.

  3. He named Himself

We do not invent names for Allah. Every name we use comes from the Qur'an or the Sunnah.

  4. Nothing is like Him

Allah hears and sees, but not as we hear and see — there is nothing at all like Him.

  5. Match the name to the need

Ask Ar-Razzaq when you need provision, Al-Ghafoor when you have sinned, Ash-Shafi when you are ill.

Surah Al-A'raaf · 7:180

“And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them. And leave [the company of] those who practice deviation concerning His names. They will be recompensed for what they have been doing.”

Surah Al-Israa · 17:110

Surah Ash-Shura · 42:11

“Allah has ninety-nine names, and he who enumerates them would get into Paradise.”

Lesson 2 · Rahmah · ages 5-7

Ar-Rahman: the Most Merciful

Every mother's love in the world is one small piece of Allah's mercy. He kept the rest with Himself.

  1. Mercy written first

The Prophet ﷺ said Allah wrote for Himself that His mercy prevails over His wrath.

  2. One part of a hundred

Allah made one hundred parts of mercy and sent down only one — all the kindness on earth comes from that single part.

  3. More merciful than your mother

Seeing a mother with her child, the Prophet ﷺ said Allah is more merciful to His servants than she is to her own child.

  4. Every surah begins with it

Almost every surah opens with Ar-Rahman Ar-Raheem, so you meet His mercy before anything else.

  5. So be merciful

Allah's mercy reaches those who are merciful to others — that includes small brothers and animals.

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:1

Lesson 3 · Khalq · ages 5-7

Al-Khaliq: the Creator

Nothing made itself. Every leaf, every fingerprint and every star is a signature of Al-Khaliq.

  1. He is the Maker of everything

Allah is the Creator of all things, and He is the Guardian over all things.

  2. Signs to look at

The Qur'an points a child at the sky, the rain, the bees and their own body as evidence.

  3. Made with purpose

Allah did not create the heavens and the earth as a game — everything has a reason.

  4. You were shaped

Allah formed you in the best proportion; your body is a made thing, not an accident.

  5. The right response

Seeing creation should produce two things: amazement and thanks.

Surah Az-Zumar · 39:62

Lesson 4 · Allah is never far · ages 8-11

As-Samee' and Al-Baseer: He hears and sees

You never have to shout for Allah. He is not deaf and He is not far away — He hears the dua you whisper in bed.

  1. Nearer than you think

Allah says when His servants ask about Him: I am near, I respond to the one who calls Me.

  2. No need to shout

When companions raised their voices, the Prophet ﷺ told them the One they call is not deaf or absent.

  3. He hears every language

Allah hears every creature at once — nothing is hidden from Him and nothing crowds Him out.

  4. He sees when nobody sees

Allah knows the secret and what is even more hidden, so honesty alone at home still matters.

  5. This is comfort, not fear only

Being seen by Al-Baseer means no good deed of yours is ever lost or unnoticed.

Surah Al-Baqara · 2:186

Then He will inform them of what they did, on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allah is, of all things, Knowing.”

Surah Qaaf · 50:16

Lesson 5 · Tawbah · ages 8-11

Al-Ghafoor: the One who keeps forgiving

Allah is not waiting to catch you out. He is waiting for you to turn back — and He is happy when you do.

  1. Never despair

Allah tells those who have wronged themselves not to despair of His mercy, because He forgives all sins.

  2. The door stays open

The Prophet ﷺ said Allah accepts a servant's repentance until the very last stage of life.

  3. He is delighted

Allah's pleasure at a servant returning is greater than a lost traveller's joy at finding his camel again.

  4. Small daily repair

The Prophet ﷺ sought forgiveness more than seventy times a day, though he had no sin — so it is a habit, not an emergency.

  5. Repentance has steps

Stop the wrong, feel sorry, ask Allah, and plan how you will avoid it next time.

Surah Az-Zumar · 39:53

Lesson 6 · Rizq · ages 12-15

Ar-Razzaq: the Provider

Your food, your family and your chances all come from one place. Knowing that removes a lot of fear.

  1. He feeds every creature

There is no creature on earth whose provision is not upon Allah.

  2. Effort plus trust

The Prophet ﷺ said if you trusted Allah truly He would provide for you as He provides for the birds — and birds still leave the nest.

  3. Rizq is more than money

Health, a good friend, time and knowledge are all provision.

  4. Nobody can take your share

No soul dies before completing its provision, so envy of others makes no sense.

  5. Say thank you out loud

Allah promises that gratitude brings increase — so thanks is part of how provision grows.

Surah Hud · 11:6
