Rahmah for everything alive

Caring for creation

Islam does not stop at how you treat people. A woman was forgiven for giving a thirsty dog a drink, and another was punished for starving a cat. Planting a tree is charity, clearing a road is charity, and wasting water is wrong even beside a river. These five lessons give a child a way of moving through the world that is gentle on purpose.

Lesson 1 · Rahmah · ages 5-7

Mercy to animals

A woman was forgiven for giving water to a thirsty dog. Kindness to an animal is real worship, not a small thing.

  1. The thirsty dog

The Prophet ﷺ told of a man who filled his shoe with water for a panting dog, and Allah forgave him for it.

  2. Reward in every living thing

The companions asked if animals earn reward too — the Prophet ﷺ said there is a reward for kindness to every living thing.

  3. No branding the face

The Prophet ﷺ forbade striking or branding an animal on the face.

  4. Do not overload or exhaust

Animals must not be made to carry more than they can, and they are watered and fed before their owner rests.

  5. Even in slaughter, be merciful

The Prophet ﷺ commanded excellence in everything, including sharpening the blade and not causing extra pain.

Surah Al-An'aam · 6:38

“And there is no creature on [or within] the earth or bird that flies with its wings except [that they are] communities like you. We have not neglected in the Register a thing. Then unto their Lord they will be gathered.”

Surah An-Nahl · 16:5

وَٱلْأَنْعَٰمَ خَلَقَهَا ۗ لَكُمْ فِيهَا دِفْءٌۭ وَمَنَٰفِعُ وَمِنْهَا تَأْكُلُونَ

Surah An-Noor · 24:41

“Do you not see that Allah is exalted by whomever is within the heavens and the earth and [by] the birds with wings spread [in flight]? Each [of them] has known his [means of] prayer and exalting [Him], and Allah is Knowing of what they do.”

“A man saw a dog eating mud from the severity of thirst, so he took a shoe and filled it with water and kept on pouring the water for the dog till it quenched its thirst.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 173

“Verily Allah has enjoined goodness to everything; so when you slaughter, slaughter in a good way, and let the slaughtered animal die comfortably.”

Sahih Muslim 1955

Lesson 2 · Cruelty has a price · ages 8-11

The warning of the cat

Neglect is a form of cruelty. Someone who kept a cat shut away without food was punished for it.

  1. A real warning

The Prophet ﷺ said a lady was punished because of a cat she imprisoned until it died.

  2. Neglect counts

She did not beat the animal — she simply gave it nothing, and that was enough.

  3. If you keep it, you feed it

Taking an animal into your care makes its food, water and space your responsibility.

  4. Never play with harm

The Prophet ﷺ forbade using living creatures as targets or making them fight for fun.

  5. Speak up

Telling an adult when an animal is being hurt is part of the same mercy.

Lesson 3 · Sadaqah that grows · ages 8-11

Plant it even so

Planting something that feeds a bird or a person keeps earning for you long after you have forgotten it.

  1. A tree is charity

The Prophet ﷺ said whenever a Muslim plants trees or cultivates land and a bird, a person or a beast eats from it, that is charity on his behalf.

  2. Plant it anyway

He ﷺ taught that you should still plant a sapling in your hand, even if it seemed too late for it to matter.

  3. The earth is a trust

Allah made us caretakers on the earth and warns against spreading corruption in it.

  4. Continuing reward

Some deeds keep paying after death, and useful planting is one of the clearest examples.

  5. Start small

One pot on a windowsill counts. It is the intention plus the living thing that matters.

Surah Al-Baqara · 2:30

They said, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?" Allah said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know."”

Surah Al-A'raaf · 7:56

Look at [each of] its fruit when it yields and [at] its ripening. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe.”

“Never does a Muslim plant trees or cultivate land and birds or a man or a beast eat out of them but that is a charity on his behalf.”

Lesson 4 · Public good · ages 5-7

Clean paths and unwasted water

Picking litter off a path is charity. Leaving a tap running is waste — even when water feels free.

  1. Removing harm is charity

The Prophet ﷺ listed removing something harmful from the road among the branches of faith.

  2. Do not dirty shared space

He ﷺ warned against fouling paths and places where people rest, calling it a cause of curses.

  3. Water is measured

The Prophet ﷺ passed Sa'd while he made wudu and told him not to be wasteful, even with water.

  4. Allah dislikes waste

Allah tells us not to be extravagant, because the extravagant are the brothers of Shaytan.

  5. Small habits

Tap off between rinses, plate finished, lights off — this is worship, done quietly.

Surah Al-A'raaf · 7:31

The whole earth is a masjid

You can pray almost anywhere clean, which is a gift — and a reason to keep the earth clean.

  1. Given to this ummah

The Prophet ﷺ said the earth has been made for me a place of prayer and a means of purification.

  2. So no excuse

A park, a school corner or an airport all work — you are never stuck without salah.

  3. Clean where you pray

If the ground is your masjid, litter and filth are not someone else's problem.

  4. Creation praises Allah

Allah says everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him — you are joining something already happening.

  5. Leave it better

Muslims should be known for leaving a place cleaner than they found it.
