Two children can do exactly the same thing and only one of them is rewarded — the difference is the niyyah in the heart. The Prophet ﷺ opened the entire subject with the hadith that deeds are only by intentions, and warned that Allah does not accept a deed done to be seen by people. These five lessons teach children to name their intention before they act, to hide some of their good deeds on purpose, and to see homework, chores and kindness at home as worship when they are done for Allah. Every point carries its ayah or hadith reference.
Lesson 1 · Niyyah · ages 8-11
Deeds are by intentions
The very first hadith of Sahih al-Bukhari: actions are judged by the intentions behind them, and each person gets what he intended.
1The hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: the reward of deeds depends upon the intentions, and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.
2Same act, different reward
The same good deed can be rewarded or not, depending only on whether it was intended for Allah or for people to see.
3Niyyah is in the heart
You do not have to say it out loud — deciding in your heart 'this is for Allah' is the niyyah.
4Fix it before you start
A quick pause before salah, before helping, before studying, is enough to set the intention.
5You can renew it
If halfway through you notice you are doing it for praise, turn it back to Allah and carry on.
Wa maa umiroo il-la liy'abu dul laaha mukhliseena lahud-deena huna faa-a wa yuqeemus salaahta wa yu-tuz zakaata; wa zaalika deenul qaiyimah
“And they were not commanded except to worship Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, inclining to truth, and to establish prayer and to give zakah. And that is the correct religion.”
Qul inna Salaatee wa nusukee wa mahyaaya wa mamaatee lillaahi Rabbil 'aalameen
“Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.”
“The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1
Do this before next time
Before three things you do today, say quietly in your heart: 'This is for Allah.'
Lesson 2 · Sirr · ages 8-11
The good nobody sees
Among the seven whom Allah will shade on that Day is the one who gave charity so secretly that his left hand did not know what his right hand gave.
1The hadith of the seven
The Prophet ﷺ named seven people Allah will shade on the Day of Judgement, including one who gives in charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given.
2Secret charity is stronger
Hiding a good deed proves it was for Allah, because nobody else could have been the reason for it.
3Allah promises it is better
Allah says that giving charity secretly is better for you and wipes away some of your sins.
4Not everything must be hidden
Some good is done openly so others learn from it — the difference is what your heart is chasing.
5Children can do this today
Tidy a sibling's room without telling, leave sadaqah in a box quietly, make dua for a friend and never mention it.
In tubdus sadaqaati fani'immaa hiya wa in tukhfoohaa wa tu'toohal fuqaraaa'a fahuwa khayrul lakum; wa yukaffiru 'ankum min saiyi aatikum; wallaahu bimaa ta'maloona Khabeer
“If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you, and He will remove from you some of your misdeeds [thereby]. And Allah, with what you do, is [fully] Acquainted.”
Allazeena yunfiqoona amwaalahum billaili wan nahaari sirranw wa 'alaaniyatan falahum ajruhum 'inda Rabbihim wa laa khawfun 'alaihim wa laa hum yahzanoon
“Those who spend their wealth [in Allah 's way] by night and by day, secretly and publicly - they will have their reward with their Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.”
“And a person who gives in charity so secretly that his left hand does not know what his right hand has given.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 660
Do this before next time
Do one good deed today that nobody, not even a parent, finds out about.
Lesson 3 · Riya · ages 12-15
When showing off spoils it
Allah says in a hadith Qudsi that He has no need of a deed in which someone associated another with Him — riya empties a good deed out.
1The hadith Qudsi
Allah says: whoever does a deed in which he associates someone else with Me, I will leave him with the one he associated.
2What riya looks like
Praying longer because someone is watching, mentioning your sadaqah, posting your good deeds for approval.
3Being seen is not riya
If people happen to see a deed you did for Allah, that does not spoil it — the intention is the test.
4The cure is asking Allah
The Prophet ﷺ taught a dua asking Allah for protection from associating anything with Him knowingly or unknowingly.
5Notice the feeling
When you find yourself hoping someone noticed, that is the moment to renew the niyyah quietly.
“Say, "I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone."”
Innal munaafiqeena yukhaadi'oonal laaha wa huwa khaadi'uhum wa izaa qaamooo ilas Salaati qaamoo kusaalaa yuraaa'oonan naasa wa laa yazkuroonal laaha illaa qaleelaa
“Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allah, but He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allah except a little,”
“Whoever does an action in which he associates anyone else with Me, I will leave him with the one he associated with Me.”
Sahih Muslim 2985
Do this before next time
Pick one good deed you usually tell people about, and do it this week without telling anyone.
Lesson 4 · Qalb · ages 5-7
Allah looks at hearts
The Prophet ﷺ said Allah does not look at your bodies or your wealth, but at your hearts and your deeds — so nobody is out of the race.
1The hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said Allah does not look at your appearance or your wealth, but He looks at your hearts and your deeds.
2Clothes and things do not rank you
A child with less can be higher with Allah than a child with more.
3It also means be careful
Looking good on the outside while the heart is proud or unkind is not enough.
4Hearts can be cleaned
Istighfar, dua and forgiving people are how the heart is kept clear.
5Ask Allah for a good heart
The Prophet ﷺ used to ask Allah to keep his heart firm and guided.
Surah Ash-Shu'araa · 26:88
يَوْمَ لَا يَنفَعُ مَالٌۭ وَلَا بَنُونَ
Yawma laa yanfa'u maalunw wa laa banoon
“The Day when there will not benefit [anyone] wealth or children”
Surah Ash-Shu'araa · 26:89
إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى ٱللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍۢ سَلِيمٍۢ
Illaa man atal laaha biqalbin saleem
“But only one who comes to Allah with a sound heart."”
Yaaa ayyuhan naasu innaa khalaqnaakum min zakarinw wa unsaa wa ja'alnaakum shu'oobanw wa qabaaa'ila lita'aarafoo inna akramakum 'indal laahi atqaakum innal laaha 'Aleemun khabeer
“O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.”
“Verily Allah does not look to your faces and your wealth but He looks to your heart and to your deeds.”
Sahih Muslim 2564c
Do this before next time
Say one kind thing today to someone that nobody expects you to be kind to.
Lesson 5 · Ibadah · ages 8-11
Turning ordinary jobs into worship
The Prophet ﷺ taught that even spending on your own family, done seeking Allah's face, is charity — intention upgrades the ordinary.
1Even feeding your family
The Prophet ﷺ told Sa'd that whatever he spends seeking Allah's pleasure will be rewarded, even the morsel he puts in his wife's mouth.
2Homework can be ibadah
Studying to become useful to the Muslims and to your parents is a niyyah, not just a task.
3Chores count
Helping at home with the intention of honouring your parents is rewarded worship.
4Sleeping and eating too
Resting so you can pray Fajr, and eating so your body can obey Allah, are done with a niyyah.
5One habit, many rewards
A single action can carry several intentions at once — obedience, kindness and seeking knowledge together.
Wa minan naasi mai yashree nafsahub tighaaa'a mardaatil laah; wallaahu ra'oofum bil'ibaad
“And of the people is he who sells himself, seeking means to the approval of Allah. And Allah is kind to [His] servants.”
Surah Al-Lail · 92:19
وَمَا لِأَحَدٍ عِندَهُۥ مِن نِّعْمَةٍۢ تُجْزَىٰٓ
Wa maa li ahadin 'indahoo min ni'matin tujzaaa
“And not [giving] for anyone who has [done him] a favor to be rewarded”
Surah Al-Lail · 92:20
إِلَّا ٱبْتِغَآءَ وَجْهِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْأَعْلَىٰ
Illab tighaaa'a wajhi rabbihil a 'laa
“But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High.”
“You will not spend anything seeking thereby the pleasure of Allah, but you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel of food which you put in the mouth of your wife.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 56
Do this before next time
Write down one chore and one school task, and next to each write the niyyah you will make for it.
