Belief in qadar means knowing that Allah already knows and has written everything, and that nothing reaches you except what He allowed. For a child this is not a heavy idea — it is a calm one. The Prophet ﷺ taught a young Ibn Abbas to be mindful of Allah and to ask only Allah, because nobody can help or harm you outside what Allah has written. He said the believer's affair is always good: grateful in ease, patient in hardship. He told us to stop saying 'if only', promised that even a thorn prick removes sins, and still commanded us to make dua, because dua is part of the plan, not a fight against it.
Lesson 1 · Advice to a boy · ages 8-11
Be mindful of Allah
The Prophet ﷺ taught young Ibn Abbas that nobody can benefit or harm him except by what Allah has already written.
1The hadith
Ibn Abbas said he was riding behind the Prophet ﷺ when he said: 'O boy, I will teach you a statement: be mindful of Allah and He will protect you; be mindful of Allah and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah, and when you seek aid, seek Allah's aid...'
2The second half
He ﷺ continued: if all creation gathered to benefit you, they could not, except with what Allah wrote for you; and if they gathered to harm you, they could not, except with what Allah wrote.
3The pens are lifted
The hadith ends: 'the pens are lifted and the pages are dried' — the writing is finished, so there is nothing left to fear from people.
4Be mindful, be protected
Protecting Allah's limits — salah, honesty, modesty — is how you find Allah protecting you.
5Ask Allah first
Ask people for help after you have asked Allah, never instead of Him.
Maaa asaaba mim musee batin fil ardi wa laa feee anfusikum illaa fee kitaabim min qabli an nabra ahaa; innaa zaalika 'alal laahi yaseer
“No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into being - indeed that, for Allah, is easy -”
“O boy! I will teach you a statement: Be mindful of Allah and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him before you. When you ask, ask Allah, and when you seek aid, seek Allah's aid. Know that if the entire creation were to gather together to do something to benefit you, you would never get any benefit except that Allah had written for you. And if they were to gather to do something to harm you, you would never be harmed except that Allah had written for you. The pens are lifted and the pages are dried.”

Do this before next time
Before you ask anyone for something today, make a short dua to Allah for it first.
Lesson 2 · Two ways to win · ages 5-7
Always good for you
Good news, say Alhamdulillah. Hard news, be patient. Either way a believer gains.
1The hadith
Suhayb reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said the affair of the believer is amazing, for all of it is good — if something delightful happens he thanks Allah and that is good for him; if something painful happens he is patient and that is good for him.
2Two buttons only
Shukr and sabr. Every situation lands on one of the two, and both earn reward.
3Practise the words
Alhamdulillah when it goes well; 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un' when something is lost.
4No third option
Complaining about Allah's choice is not on the list — it takes the reward away and changes nothing.
5Allah knows better
Allah says you may dislike something that is good for you, and like something that is bad for you.
Kutiba alaikumulqitaalu wa huwa kurhullakum wa 'asaaa an takrahoo shai'anw wa huwa khairullakum wa 'asaaa an tuhibbo shai'anw wa huwa sharrullakum; wallaahu ya'lamu wa antum laa ta'lamoon
“Fighting has been enjoined upon you while it is hateful to you. But perhaps you hate a thing and it is good for you; and perhaps you love a thing and it is bad for you. And Allah Knows, while you know not.”
Maaa asaaba mim musee batin illaa bi-iznil laah; wa many yu'mim billaahi yahdi qalbah; wallaahu bikulli shai;in Aleem
“No disaster strikes except by permission of Allah. And whoever believes in Allah - He will guide his heart. And Allah is Knowing of all things.”
“Strange are the ways of a believer, for there is good in every affair of his... if he has an occasion to feel delight, he thanks Allah, thus there is good for him in it, and if he gets into trouble and shows resignation (and endures it patiently), there is good for him in it.”
Sahih Muslim 2999

Lesson 3 · Words that open a door · ages 12-15
No 'if only'
When something goes wrong, say 'Allah decreed it' instead of replaying what you should have done.
1The hadith
Abu Hurayra reported the Prophet ﷺ said a strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak believer, and there is good in both; seek what benefits you, seek Allah's help and do not lose heart; and if something befalls you, do not say 'if I had not done that it would not have happened', but say 'Allah decreed it' — for 'if' opens the door to Shaytan.
2Be strong first
The same hadith praises strength — effort, skill, preparation. Qadar is never an excuse for laziness.
3Regret loops
Replaying 'if only I had...' after the result is fixed only feeds sadness; Shaytan uses that door.
4The healthy version
Learning a lesson for next time is good. Punishing yourself over what Allah already wrote is not.
5Say it plainly
'Qaddarallahu wa ma sha'a fa'al' — Allah decreed it and did what He willed.
Fabimaa rahmatim minal laahi linta lahum wa law kunta fazzan ghaleezal qalbi lanfaddoo min hawlika fafu 'anhum wastaghfir lahum wa shaawirhum fil amri fa izaa 'azamta fatawakkal 'alal laah; innallaaha yuhibbul mutawak kileen
“So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].”
“A strong believer is better and is more lovable to Allah than a weak believer... and if anything (in the form of trouble) comes to you, don't say: If I had not done that, it would not have happened so and so, but say: Allah did that what He had ordained to do, and your 'if' opens the (gate) for Satan.”
Sahih Muslim 2664
Do this before next time
Catch yourself once this week starting a sentence with 'if only', and finish it with 'Allah decreed it' instead.
Lesson 4 · Small pains count · ages 8-11
Even a thorn
No tiredness, illness, worry or scratch reaches a Muslim without Allah wiping away some of their sins.
1The hadith
Abu Sa'id al-Khudri and Abu Hurayra reported the Prophet ﷺ said no fatigue, disease, sorrow, sadness, hurt or distress befalls a Muslim, even the prick of a thorn, but Allah expiates some of his sins for it.
2The list is long
Notice worry and sadness are included — feelings count, not just injuries.
3Not a punishment
Difficulty can be a wash, not a fine. That changes how a child reads a bad day.
4Patience makes it count
Be patient rather than furious, and the same event becomes reward instead of stress.
5Allah tests to raise
Allah promises glad tidings to the patient who say 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un'.
“Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return."”
“No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5641
Do this before next time
Next time something small goes wrong, say Alhamdulillah on purpose and notice how it feels.
Lesson 5 · Keep asking · ages 12-15
Dua is part of the plan
Believing in qadar never means stopping dua — the Prophet ﷺ taught that dua turns back the decree.
1The hadith
Salman reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Nothing turns back the decree except supplication, and nothing increases the lifespan except righteousness.' (Graded hasan gharib by Tirmidhi.)
2Not a contradiction
Allah wrote the outcome and He wrote the dua that leads to it. Your asking is inside the plan, not outside it.
3So keep asking
Ask for small things too — a test, a friendship, a lost item. Allah is not bothered by frequent requests.
4Three answers
Allah gives what you asked, or something better, or saves it for the akhirah. There is no wasted dua.
5Allah is near
Allah says He is near and responds to the one who calls upon Him.
Wa izaa sa alaka 'ibaadee 'annnee fa innee qareebun ujeebu da'wataddaa'i izaa da'aani falyastajeeboo lee walyu minoo beela 'allahum yarshudoon
“And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.”
Wa qaala Rabbukumud 'ooneee astajib lakum; innal lazeena yastakbiroona an 'ibaadatee sa yadkhuloona jahannama daakhireen
“And your Lord says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." Indeed, those who disdain My worship will enter Hell [rendered] contemptible.”
“Nothing turns back the Decree except supplication, and nothing increases the life-span except righteousness.”
