Children hear about shaytan long before anyone explains him properly, and half-explanations make them anxious. Islam's teaching is steady: shaytan whispers, he cannot force, and a Muslim has been given words that protect. These five lessons stay inside authentic narrations — the hadith that each person has a jinn companion and that Allah protected His Messenger ﷺ from his, the hadith of Ayat al-Kursi as a guard through the night, 'Aishah's report of the three surahs blown into the hands at bedtime, the dua of refuge in Allah's perfect words, and the everyday sunnahs of eating with the right hand and closing the doors at dusk with Allah's name. Nothing here is folklore; every point has a reference.
Lesson 1 · Waswas · ages 8-11
Whispers, not power
Shaytan suggests; he cannot make you do anything. Knowing that turns fear into confidence.
1Everyone has a companion
The Prophet ﷺ said there is none among you without an attaché from among the jinn; the Companions asked, 'You too?' He said yes — but Allah helped him against it, so it commanded him only to good.
2He only calls
Allah quotes shaytan on the Day of Judgement: he had no power over people except that he invited them, and they responded.
3He is an open enemy
Allah warns us not to follow the footsteps of shaytan; he is a clear enemy, not a friend playing tricks.
4So bad thoughts are not sins
A whisper arriving is not your choice; what you do next is.
5The answer is remembrance
Turn to Allah the moment a whisper comes, and it loses its grip.
Wa qaalash Shaitaanu lammaa qudiyal amru innal laaha wa'adakum wa'dal haqqi wa wa'attukum faakhlaftukum wa maa kaana liya 'alaikum min sultaanin illaaa an da'awtukum fastajabtum lee falaa taloomoonee wa loomooo anfusakum maaa ana bimusrikhikum wa maaa antum bimusrikhiyya innee kafartu bimaaa ashraktumooni min qabl; innaz zaalimeena lahum azaabun aleem
“And Satan will say when the matter has been concluded, "Indeed, Allah had promised you the promise of truth. And I promised you, but I betrayed you. But I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me; but blame yourselves. I cannot be called to your aid, nor can you be called to my aid. Indeed, I deny your association of me [with Allah] before. Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment."”
“There is none amongst you with whom is not an attaché from amongst the jinn. They said: Messenger of Allah, with you too? He said: Yes, but Allah helps me against him, and so I am safe from his hand, and he does not command me but for good.”
Sahih Muslim 2814
Do this before next time
Next time a mean thought arrives, say 'A'udhu billahi min ash-shaytan' and carry on with what you were doing.
Lesson 2 · Isti'adhah · ages 5-7
Seeking refuge in Allah
Allah teaches us the exact words to say when shaytan comes near — and promises that the person who says them is protected.
1Allah's own instruction
Allah says: if a suggestion comes to you from shaytan, seek refuge in Allah — He is Hearing and Knowing.
2Say it before you recite
Allah tells us that when we recite the Qur'an, we should seek refuge in Allah from shaytan.
3The travel dua
The Prophet ﷺ said whoever stops at a place and says 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created' will not be harmed until he leaves that place.
4Words, not objects
Protection in Islam comes from Allah through His words — not from charms, threads or lucky items.
5Teach your tongue
Say it so often that it comes out by itself when you are startled.
Wa qur Rabbi a'oozu bika min hamazaatish Shayaateen
“And say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils,”
“When anyone lands at a place and then says: 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created', nothing will harm him until he departs from that stopping place.”
A'udhu bi-kalimatillahi at-tammati min sharri ma khalaq
I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.
Sahih Muslim 2708
Do this before next time
Learn the refuge dua by heart and say it when you arrive somewhere new this week.
Lesson 3 · A guard till morning · ages 8-11
Ayat al-Kursi at bedtime
The Prophet ﷺ confirmed that whoever recites Ayat al-Kursi on going to bed has a guard from Allah until morning.
1The narration
Abu Hurayrah was told: when you go to your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi, for then there will be a guard from Allah who will protect you all night, and no shaytan will come near you until morning. The Prophet ﷺ confirmed the words were true.
2Which ayah it is
Ayat al-Kursi is Surah Al-Baqarah, ayah 255 — the ayah about Allah's throne, His knowledge and His care of all things.
3It is about Allah, not magic
The protection is Allah's; the ayah is you asking Him by His own words.
4Make it part of bedtime
Wudhu if you can, then Ayat al-Kursi, then the sleeping dua — the same order every night.
5Learn it in pieces
A few words a night is enough; a young child can hold the whole ayah in a fortnight.
Allahu laaa ilaaha illaa Huwal Haiyul Qaiyoom; laa taakhuzuhoo sinatunw wa laa nawm; lahoo maa fissamaawaati wa maa fil ard; man zal lazee yashfa'u indahooo illaa bi-iznih; ya'lamu maa baina aydeehim wa mww khalfahum wa laa yuheetoona bishai'im min 'ilmihee illaa bimaa shaaa'; wasi'a Kursiyyuhus samaawaati wal arda wa laa ya'ooduho hifzuhumaa; wa Huwal Aliyyul 'Azeem
“Allah - there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
“When you go to your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi, for then there will be a guard from Allah who will protect you all night long, and no Satan will come near you until the morning.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5010
Do this before next time
Recite Ayat al-Kursi every night this week — ask a parent to listen on the last night.
Lesson 4 · Sunnah at bedtime · ages 5-7
The three surahs before sleep
'Aishah described exactly what the Prophet ﷺ did each night: cup the hands, recite three surahs, blow into them and wipe over the body.
1What he ﷺ did
Every night when he went to bed he cupped his hands together, blew into them after reciting Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas, then wiped over what he could of his body, starting with his head and face — three times.
2Al-Falaq
Surah 113 — asking the Lord of the daybreak for refuge from every evil He created.
3An-Nas
Surah 114 — asking the Lord of mankind for refuge from the whisperer who withdraws.
4Al-Ikhlas
Al-Ikhlas — the pure declaration of who Allah is; recited with them in this sunnah.
5A child can do all of it
Three short surahs, three times, hands and a whisper — the whole sunnah takes a minute.
“Whenever the Prophet (ﷺ) went to bed every night, he used to cup his hands together and blow over it after reciting Surat Al-Ikhlas, Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas, and then rub his hands over whatever parts of his body he was able to rub, starting with his head, face and front of his body. He used to do that three times.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5017
Do this before next time
Do the full bedtime sunnah — three surahs, three times — every night until the next lesson.
Lesson 5 · Everyday · ages 8-11
Small sunnahs that shut the door
The sunnah gives ordinary moments — eating, closing up the house at dusk — small actions that keep shaytan out.
1Eat and drink with the right hand
The Prophet ﷺ said to eat and drink with the right hand, because shaytan eats and drinks with his left.
2Bring the children in at dusk
He ﷺ said: when night falls, keep your children close, for the devils spread out at that time; after an hour of the night has passed you may let them be.
3Close the doors with Allah's name
In the same hadith: close your doors and mention the name of Allah, for shaytan does not open a closed door.
4Adhan drives him off
He ﷺ said that when the adhan is pronounced shaytan takes to his heels so as not to hear it.
5Small, repeated, real
None of these are dramatic; they are habits, and habits are what actually protect a person.
Wa qur Rabbi a'oozu bika min hamazaatish Shayaateen
“And say, "My Lord, I seek refuge in You from the incitements of the devils,”
“When any one of you intends to eat, he should eat with his right hand, and when he drinks he should drink with his right hand, for Satan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand.”
Sahih Muslim 2020
“When night falls, keep your children close to you, for the devils spread out at that time. But when an hour of the night elapses, you can let them free. Close the doors and mention the Name of Allah, for Satan does not open a closed door.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 3304
Do this before next time
Take charge of one dusk job at home this week — closing the door and saying Bismillah as you do it.
