Haya is not weakness or embarrassment — the Prophet ﷺ called it a branch of iman and said it brings nothing but good. For a child, haya is the inner brake: it stops the eyes from staring at what is not theirs to see, keeps speech and clothing dignified, makes them knock before entering, and reminds them that Allah is watching even when nobody else is. These five lessons teach that quiet strength with the exact ayah or hadith behind each point, so a child learns modesty as honour rather than shame.
Lesson 1 · Haya · ages 8-11
Modesty is a branch of iman
The Prophet ﷺ listed haya among the branches of faith and said modesty brings nothing except good.
1The hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said faith has many branches, and haya (modesty) is a branch of faith.
2It only ever helps
He ﷺ also said that haya brings nothing but good.
3Not the same as being timid
Haya does not stop you asking a teacher a real question — Aisha praised the women of the Ansar for asking about religion.
4Islam's own character
The Prophet ﷺ said every religion has a character, and the character of Islam is haya.
5Where it starts
It begins in the heart: caring what Allah thinks of you more than what a crowd thinks.

And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment. And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, that you might succeed.”
“Iman has over seventy branches, and modesty is a branch of Iman.”
Sahih Muslim 35a
“Haya' (pious shyness from committing religious indiscretions) does not bring anything except good.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 6117
Do this before next time
Name one thing you would stop doing if you remembered Allah was watching, and stop doing it this week.
Lesson 2 · Basar · ages 12-15
Guarding your eyes
Allah commands believing men and women to lower their gaze and guard themselves — a rule for screens as much as streets.
1Allah's command
Allah tells the believing men to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and gives the believing women the same instruction.
2It is about the first look
The Prophet ﷺ told Ali not to follow one glance with another.
3Screens count
The same rule applies to phones, adverts and videos — a scroll is a gaze.
4The ears too
Allah says the hearing, the sight and the heart will all be asked about.
5The reward is clarity
Guarding the eyes keeps the heart calm and makes it easier to focus in salah.

“O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.”
“Allah will not look at the one who drags his garment out of pride.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 5788
Do this before next time
Check your own clothes for the week ahead and pick what is modest, clean and comfortable for salah.
Lesson 4 · Isti'dhan · ages 5-7
Knock before you enter
Allah tells the believers not to enter homes without permission and greeting, and the Prophet ﷺ made asking permission three times the sunnah.
1Allah's rule for homes
Allah says do not enter houses other than your own until you have asked permission and greeted the people in them.
2Ask three times
The Prophet ﷺ said permission is asked three times, and if you are not given it, go back.
3Do not peek
The Prophet ﷺ warned strongly against looking into someone's house without permission.
4Family rooms too
Knocking on a sibling's or parent's door is exactly this sunnah at home.
5Privacy is not secrecy
Respecting a closed door is manners; hiding wrongdoing behind one is not.
Yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo laa tadkhuloo buyootan ghaira buyootikum hatta tastaanisoo wa tusallimoo 'allaa ahlihaa; zaalikum khairul lakum la'allakum tazakkaroon
“O you who have believed, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you ascertain welcome and greet their inhabitants. That is best for you; perhaps you will be reminded.”
Fa il lam tajidoo feehaaa ahadan falaa tadkhuloohaa hattaa yu'zana lakum wa in qeela lakumurji'oo farji'oo huwa azkaa lakum; wallaahu bimaa ta'maloona 'Aleem
“And if you do not find anyone therein, do not enter them until permission has been given you. And if it is said to you, "Go back," then go back; it is purer for you. And Allah is Knowing of what you do.”
“Permission is to be asked three times; if permission is granted, then enter, otherwise go back.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 6245
Do this before next time
Knock and wait for an answer every time you enter a room at home for the next three days.
Lesson 5 · Ihsan · ages 12-15
Feeling shy before Allah
The Prophet ﷺ told the Companions to be shy before Allah as they would be before a righteous man from their people.
1The hadith
The Prophet ﷺ said: be shy before Allah as you would be shy before a righteous man from among your people.
2Real haya has a checklist
In the same hadith he ﷺ explained it as guarding the head, the stomach, and remembering death and decay.
3Allah sees the hidden
Allah says He knows the secret and what is even more hidden than that.
4Alone is the test
What a person does when nobody is watching is the true measure of their haya.
5It leads to tawbah
Haya makes you rush to istighfar quickly instead of arguing with your conscience.
Huwal lazee khalaqas samaawaati wal arda fee sittati ayyaamin summas tawaa 'alal 'Arsh; ya'lamu maa yaliju filardi wa maa yakhruju minhaa wa maa yanzilu minas samaaa'i wa maa ya'ruju feeha wa Huwa ma'akum ayna maa kuntum; wallaahu bimaa ta'maloona Baseer
“It is He who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He knows what penetrates into the earth and what emerges from it and what descends from the heaven and what ascends therein; and He is with you wherever you are. And Allah, of what you do, is Seeing.”
“He knows that which deceives the eyes and what the breasts conceal.”
“Be shy of Allah as you would be shy of a righteous man from your people.”
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2458
Do this before next time
Write down one private habit you would be ashamed of if a righteous person saw it, then make a plan to leave it.
