Children hear the names Makkah, Madinah and al-Aqsa long before they understand why those three places are different from every other masjid. The Prophet ﷺ named exactly three masjids for which a special journey is made; Abu Dharr was told which was built first and how long after; the reward of prayer in his masjid and in al-Masjid al-Haram is described in numbers; he ﷺ asked Allah for double the blessing of Makkah for Madinah; and he described the space between his house and his pulpit as a garden of Paradise. Nothing in this module is folklore — each lesson names its hadith and its ayah so an older child can look it up.
Lesson 1 · The journey · ages 8-11
Only three masjids
The Prophet ﷺ said a journey is not set out on except to three masjids: al-Haram, his masjid, and al-Aqsa.
1The hadith
Abu Hurayra reported the Prophet ﷺ said do not set out on a journey except for three masjids: al-Masjid al-Haram, the masjid of Allah's Messenger ﷺ, and the masjid of al-Aqsa.
2Where they are
Al-Masjid al-Haram is in Makkah, the Prophet's masjid is in Madinah, and al-Masjid al-Aqsa is in Jerusalem.
3Why only three
Every masjid is a house of Allah, but travel as an act of worship was tied to these three alone.
4The night journey
Allah mentions the journey by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings He blessed.
5Your local masjid still matters
The hadith limits special journeys, not love of the masjid nearest to you.
“Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from al-Masjid al-Haram to al-Masjid al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.”
Qad naraa taqalluba wajhika fis samaaa'i fala nuwalliyannaka qiblatan tardaahaa; fawalli wajhaka shatral Masjidil haaraam; wa haisu maa kuntum fawalloo wujoohakum shatrah; wa innal lazeena ootul Kitaaba laya'lamoona annahul haqqu mir Rabbihim; wa mal laahu bighaafilin 'ammaa ya'maloon
“We have certainly seen the turning of your face, [O Muhammad], toward the heaven, and We will surely turn you to a qiblah with which you will be pleased. So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram. And wherever you [believers] are, turn your faces toward it [in prayer]. Indeed, those who have been given the Scripture well know that it is the truth from their Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do.”
Inna awwala Baitinw wudi'a linnaasi lallazee bi Bakkata mubaarakanw wa hudal lil 'aalameen
“Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah - blessed and a guidance for the worlds.”
“Do not set out on a journey except for three Mosques i.e. Al-Masjid-AI-Haram, the Mosque of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ), and the Mosque of Al-Aqsa.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1189

Lesson 2 · The first house · ages 12-15
Which was built first
Abu Dharr asked which masjid was built first; the answer was al-Masjid al-Haram, then al-Aqsa forty years later.
1The hadith
Abu Dharr asked the Prophet ﷺ which masjid was built first on earth; he said al-Masjid al-Haram, then al-Masjid al-Aqsa, and said there were forty years between them.
2What he added
He ﷺ told Abu Dharr to pray wherever the time for prayer comes, for that is a masjid.
3The first house for people
Allah says the first House established for mankind was the one at Bakkah, blessed and a guidance for the worlds.
4Ibrahim and Isma'il
Allah describes Ibrahim and Isma'il raising the foundations of the House and asking Allah to accept it.
5Old, and still standing
The Ka'bah is the oldest place of worship a Muslim child will ever hear about, and it is still faced five times a day.
Feehi Aayaatum baiyinaatum Maqaamu Ibraaheema wa man dakhalahoo kaana aaminaa; wa lillaahi 'alan naasi Hijjul Baiti manis tataa'a ilaihi sabeelaa; wa man kafara fa innal laaha ghaniyyun 'anil 'aalameen
“In it are clear signs [such as] the standing place of Abraham. And whoever enters it shall be safe. And [due] to Allah from the people is a pilgrimage to the House - for whoever is able to find thereto a way. But whoever disbelieves - then indeed, Allah is free from need of the worlds.”
Wa iz yarfa'u Ibraaheemul qawaa'ida minal Baitiwa Ismaa'eelu Rabbanaa taqabbal minnaa innaka Antas Samee'ul Aleem
“And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael, [saying], "Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed You are the Hearing, the Knowing.”
“Abu Dharr reported: I said: Messenger of Allah, which mosque was built first on the surface of the earth? He said: Al-Masjid-ul-Haram. I said: Which next? He said: It was the Masjid Aqsa. I said: How long was the period between the building of the two? He said: Forty years.”
Sahih Muslim 520a

Lesson 3 · Multiplied · ages 8-11
The reward of praying there
One prayer in the Prophet's masjid is better than a thousand elsewhere, except al-Masjid al-Haram.
1The hadith
Abu Hurayra reported the Prophet ﷺ said one prayer in my masjid is better than a thousand prayers in any other masjid, except al-Masjid al-Haram.
2The exception matters
Al-Masjid al-Haram is left out of the comparison because its reward is greater still.
3Built on taqwa
Allah speaks of a masjid founded on taqwa from the first day as more worthy for you to stand in.
4Reward is Allah's to give
Numbers in hadith teach us value; they are not a game to calculate with.
5Do not wait for a journey
A child who prays at home or at the local masjid is still building the habit that these rewards are given for.
Laa taqum feehi abadaa; lamasjidun ussisa 'alat taqwaa min awwali yawmin ahaqqu an taqooma feeh; feehi rijaaluny yuhibbona ai yatatahharoo, wallaahu yuhibbul mmuttah hireen
“Do not stand [for prayer] within it - ever. A mosque founded on righteousness from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. Within it are men who love to purify themselves; and Allah loves those who purify themselves.”
Fee buyootin azinal laahu an turfa'a wa yuzkara feehasmuhoo yusabbihu lahoo feehaa bilghuduwwi wal aasaal
“[Such niches are] in mosques which Allah has ordered to be raised and that His name be mentioned therein; exalting Him within them in the morning and the evenings”
Wa min haisu kharajta fawalli wajhaka shatral Masjidil Haraami wa innahoo lalhaqqu mir Rabbik; wa mallaahu bighaafilin 'ammaa ta'maloon
“So from wherever you go out [for prayer, O Muhammad] turn your face toward al- Masjid al-Haram, and indeed, it is the truth from your Lord. And Allah is not unaware of what you do.”
“One prayer in my Mosque is better than one thousand prayers in any other mosque excepting Al-Masjid-AI-Haram.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1190

Lesson 4 · Barakah · ages 5-7
His dua for Madinah
The Prophet ﷺ asked Allah to give Madinah twice the blessing given to Makkah.
1The hadith
Anas reported the Prophet ﷺ said: O Allah, bestow on Madinah twice the blessings You bestowed on Makkah.
2He loved the city
Madinah welcomed him after the hijrah, and he made dua for its people and its food.
3Barakah means growth
Barakah is Allah putting good and increase into something small.
4Ibrahim did the same
Allah records Ibrahim asking Him to make Makkah secure and to provide its people with fruits.
5You can pray for your home
A child can copy the Prophet ﷺ by asking Allah to put barakah in their own home and city.
“Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.”
Wa iz qaala Ibraaheemu Rabbij 'al haazaa baladan aaminanw warzuq ahlahoo minas samaraati man aamana minhum billaahi wal yawmil aakhiri qaala wa man kafara faumatti'uhoo qaleelan summa adtarruhooo ilaa 'azaabin Naari wa bi'salmaseer
“And [mention] when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this a secure city and provide its people with fruits - whoever of them believes in Allah and the Last Day." [Allah] said. "And whoever disbelieves - I will grant him enjoyment for a little; then I will force him to the punishment of the Fire, and wretched is the destination."”
Innal laaha wa malaaa'i katahoo yusalloona 'alan Nabiyy; yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo salloo 'alaihi wa sallimoo tasleemaa
“Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.”
Innamaa ya'muru masaa jidal laahi man aamana billaahi wal Yawmil Aakhiri wa aqaamas Salaata wa aataz Zakaata wa lam yakkhsa illal laaha fa'asaaa ulaaa'ika ai yakoonoo minal muhtadeen
“The mosques of Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day and establish prayer and give zakah and do not fear except Allah, for it is expected that those will be of the [rightly] guided.”
“O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.”
“Between my house and my pulpit there is a garden of the gardens of Paradise.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 1196
