Ihsan is the highest level of our deen. When Jibril asked the Prophet ﷺ about it, he answered: worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, know that He sees you. From that one sentence comes a whole way of living — praying carefully because Allah is watching, finishing homework properly, being kind when nobody would notice, and treating animals and people gently. The Prophet ﷺ said Allah has prescribed ihsan in everything, and then showed how cheap it can be: a smile, moving a thorn from a path, pouring water for someone, lifting a worry off a person's shoulders.
Lesson 1 · The meaning of ihsan · ages 8-11
As if you see Him
Jibril asked about ihsan and the Prophet ﷺ answered: worship Allah as if you see Him; if you cannot, He still sees you.
1The hadith
In the hadith of Jibril, when asked about ihsan, the Prophet ﷺ said: 'It is that you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, and while you see Him not, yet truly He sees you.'
2Three levels
The same hadith lists islam (actions), iman (belief) and ihsan (beauty) — ihsan is the top level.
3What it changes
Salah stops being rushed. You slow down in ruku and sujud because you know Who is watching.
4Also when alone
Ihsan means behaving the same when no parent or teacher is in the room.
5Allah sees us
Allah is with us wherever we are, and nothing is hidden from Him.
Huwal lazee khalaqas samaawaati wal arda fee sittati ayyaamin summas tawaa 'alal 'Arsh; ya'lamu maa yaliju filardi wa maa yakhruju minhaa wa maa yanzilu minas samaaa'i wa maa ya'ruju feeha wa Huwa ma'akum ayna maa kuntum; wallaahu bimaa ta'maloona Baseer
“It is He who created the heavens and earth in six days and then established Himself above the Throne. He knows what penetrates into the earth and what emerges from it and what descends from the heaven and what ascends therein; and He is with you wherever you are. And Allah, of what you do, is Seeing.”
Balaa man aslama wajhahoo lillaahi wa huwa muhsinun falahooo ajruhoo 'inda rabbihee wa laa khawfun 'alaihim wa laa hum yahzanoon
“Yes [on the contrary], whoever submits his face in Islam to Allah while being a doer of good will have his reward with his Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.”
“He (the Holy Prophet) said: It means that you should worship Allah as if you are seeing Him, for though you don't see Him, He, verily, sees you.”
Sahih Muslim 8a
Do this before next time
Pray one salah today slower than usual, remembering that Allah is watching you.
Lesson 2 · Even the small jobs · ages 8-11
Ihsan in everything
The Prophet ﷺ said Allah has prescribed excellence in everything, and gave the gentlest example.
1The hadith
Shaddad ibn Aws reported the Prophet ﷺ said Allah has prescribed ihsan in all things, and taught that even when slaughtering an animal it must be done in the best and kindest way.
2Everything means everything
Homework, tidying your room, helping a sibling, praying — all of it is included.
3Sharpen the blade
In the same hadith he ﷺ said to sharpen the knife so the animal is not made to suffer. Ihsan cares about details.
4Half-done is not ihsan
Finishing a job properly is worship when you do it for Allah.
5Allah loves the muhsinin
Allah repeatedly says He loves those who do things beautifully.
Wa anfiqoo fee sabeelil laahi wa laa tulqoo bi aydeekum ilat tahlukati wa ahsinoo; innal laaha yuhibbul muhsineen
“And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction [by refraining]. And do good; indeed, Allah loves the doers of good.”
Innal laaha yaamaru bil 'adli wal ihsaani wa eetaaa'i zil qurbaa wa yanhaa 'anil fahshaaa'i wal munkari walbagh-i' ya'izukum la'allakum tazakkkaroon
“Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.”
“Verily Allah has enjoined goodness in everything.”
Sahih Muslim 1955a

Lesson 3 · Nothing is too little · ages 5-7
Small good deeds
Guiding someone, moving a thorn from the path, or pouring water are all counted as good deeds.
1The hadith
Abu Dharr reported the Prophet ﷺ listed easy good deeds, including guiding someone who is lost, helping a person with weak eyesight, removing stones and thorns from the road, and pouring water for a thirsty person.
2Charity without money
None of these cost anything. Children can do every single one.
3Notice the path
Litter on the floor, a bag in a doorway, a chair in the way — move it.
4Help the one struggling
Show a lost child where to go; carry something heavy for a grandparent.
5Allah wastes nothing
Allah does not lose the reward of those who do good.
Innal lazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati innaa laa nudee'u ajra man ahsana 'amalaa
“Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - indeed, We will not allow to be lost the reward of any who did well in deeds.”
Surah Az-Zalzala · 99:7
فَمَن يَعْمَلْ مِثْقَالَ ذَرَّةٍ خَيْرًۭا يَرَهُۥ
Famaiy ya'mal mithqala zarratin khai raiy-yarah
“So whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it,”
“Your smiling in the face of your brother is charity, commanding good and forbidding evil is charity, your giving directions to a man lost is charity... your removal of rocks, thorns and bones from people's paths is charity, your pouring water from your bucket into your brother's is charity.”
Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1956

Lesson 4 · A smile and a bucket · ages 5-7
Charity that costs nothing
Meeting your brother with a cheerful face is charity, and so is pouring water into his bucket.
1The hadith
Abu Dharr reported the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Do not consider any good deed insignificant, even meeting your brother with a cheerful face.'
2A cheerful face
How you greet someone changes their whole morning — and it is written as sadaqah.
3Pouring water
Sharing what is already in your hands is the easiest charity there is.
4Never say 'too small'
The hadith warns us not to look down on any good deed.
5Salam first
Give salam before you speak; it starts every meeting with goodness.
Wa laa tatamannaw maa faddalal laahu bihee ba'dakum 'alaa ba'd; lirrijaali naseebum mimak tasaboo wa linnisaaa'i naseebum mimmak tasabna; was'alullaaha min fadlih; innal laaha kaana bikulli shai'in 'Aleemaa
“And do not wish for that by which Allah has made some of you exceed others. For men is a share of what they have earned, and for women is a share of what they have earned. And ask Allah of his bounty. Indeed Allah is ever, of all things, Knowing.”
“Do not consider any good deed insignificant, even meeting your brother with a cheerful face.”
Sahih Muslim 2626
Do this before next time
Greet three people today with salam and a cheerful face.
Lesson 5 · Allah helps the helper · ages 12-15
Lift someone's hardship
Whoever relieves a believer's difficulty, Allah relieves one of his difficulties on the Day of Judgement.
1The hadith
Abu Hurayra reported the Prophet ﷺ said whoever relieves a believer of a hardship in this world, Allah will relieve him of a hardship on the Day of Resurrection, and whoever helps ease someone in difficulty, Allah will ease things for him.
2Same hadith, more
It also promises that Allah conceals the faults of one who conceals a Muslim's fault, and helps the servant who helps his brother.
3Hardship is often small
A classmate who lost their homework, a neighbour carrying shopping, a sibling stuck on a question.
4Help quietly
Ihsan does not need an audience; Allah has already counted it.
5Walk towards it
The hadith says Allah is with the servant as long as he is walking in the aid of his brother.
“He who alleviates the suffering of a brother out of the sufferings of the world, Allah would alleviate his suffering from the sufferings of the Day of Resurrection... Allah helps His servant as long as he helps his brother.”
