For a child, Friday can be the day the week points towards. The Prophet ﷺ called it the best day on which the sun rises, described a reward that shrinks the later you arrive, told us angels write down the names of those coming in, forbade even shushing someone during the khutbah, and asked us to send more blessings upon him on that day. Allah Himself commands us in Surah al-Jumu'ah to hurry to the remembrance when the call is made. These five lessons walk through the day in order, each with the ayah shown from the verified Qur'an text and the hadith resolvable on sunnah.com.
Lesson 1 · Why Friday · ages 5-7
The best day the sun rises on
The Prophet ﷺ said the best day the sun rises on is Friday, and named the great things that happened on it.
1The hadith
Abu Hurayra reported the Prophet ﷺ said the best day on which the sun has risen is Friday: on it Adam was created, on it he entered the Garden, and on it he was taken out of it.
2A weekly gift
Every week Muslims get a day marked out for gathering and worship — no one has to wait for a year.
3Allah names the day
Allah addresses the believers about the day of Jumu'ah and the call to prayer in Surah al-Jumu'ah.
4Not a day off worship
Friday is busier with worship, not lighter — washing, going early, listening, dua.
5Look forward to it
Talk about Jumu'ah on Thursday night so the child arrives excited rather than rushed.
“O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.”
Wa izaa ra'aw tijaaratan aw lahwanin faddooo ilaihaa wa tarakooka qaaa'imaa; qul maa 'indal laahi khairum minal lahwi wa minat tijaarah; wallaahu khayrur raaziqeen
“But when they saw a transaction or a diversion, [O Muhammad], they rushed to it and left you standing. Say, "What is with Allah is better than diversion and than a transaction, and Allah is the best of providers."”
“The best day on which the sun has risen is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he was made to enter Paradise, on it he was expelled from it.”
Sahih Muslim 854a
Do this before next time
Ask a parent which Friday habit your family will keep every week, and start it this Friday.
Lesson 2 · Getting ready · ages 8-11
Wash, dress and go early
The earlier you arrive after washing, the greater the reward — from a camel down to an egg.
1The hadith
Abu Hurayra reported the Prophet ﷺ said whoever bathes on Friday like the bath for janabah and then goes early, it is as if he sacrificed a camel; the next hour a cow, then a ram, then a hen, then an egg.
2When it stops
The same hadith says that once the imam comes out, the angels present themselves to listen to the khutbah.
3Wash first
The Friday wash is part of the reward — clean body, clean clothes, then the masjid.
4Being early is worship
Arriving before the khutbah is not just politeness; the hadith attaches reward to each hour earlier.
5Allah says hurry
Allah commands that when the call for the Jumu'ah prayer is made, hurry to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade.
“O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.”
“And when the prayer has been concluded, disperse within the land and seek from the bounty of Allah, and remember Allah often that you may succeed.”
“Any person who takes a bath on Friday like the bath of Janaba and then goes for the prayer (in the first hour i.e. early), it is as if he had sacrificed a camel (in Allah's cause); and whoever goes in the second hour it is as if he had sacrificed a cow ... When the Imam comes out (i.e. starts delivering the Khutba), the angels present themselves to listen to the Khutba.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 881
Do this before next time
This Friday, aim to leave the house early enough to sit down before the imam stands up.
Lesson 3 · Your name written · ages 8-11
Angels at the masjid gate
On Friday angels stand at the masjid gate writing the names of those who come, in the order they arrive.
1The hadith
Abu Hurayra reported the Prophet ﷺ said on Friday the angels stand at the gate of the masjid and write the names of those coming in, in the order of their arrival.
2The list closes
The hadith says when the imam comes out, the angels fold their papers and listen to the khutbah.
3Nothing is missed
Allah tells us there are honourable recorders who write down what we do.
4It is a kind image
A child understands a register: coming in early means your name goes near the top.
5Walk in with wudu
Come already in wudu so nothing delays you at the door.
Maa yalfizu min qawlin illaa ladaihi raqeebun 'ateed
“Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared [to record].”
“When it is a Friday, the angels stand at the gate of the mosque and keep on writing the names of the persons coming to the mosque in succession according to their arrivals ... When the Imam comes out (for Jumua prayer) they (i.e. angels) fold their papers and listen to the Khutba.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 929
Do this before next time
Make wudu at home before Jumu'ah so you can walk straight in and sit down.
Lesson 4 · Listening is the worship · ages 12-15
Silent through the khutbah
Even telling someone else to be quiet during the khutbah is wrong — listening is the act itself.
1The hadith
Abu Hurayra reported the Prophet ﷺ said if you tell your companion to keep quiet while the imam delivers the khutbah, you have done an evil act.
2The reward for listening
Muslim records that whoever bathes, comes to Jumu'ah, prays, keeps silent until the imam finishes and prays with him, has his sins between that Friday and the next forgiven, and three days more.
3Allah's command
Allah says when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it and be silent, so that you may receive mercy.
4Phones away
The modern version of talking through the khutbah is scrolling through it.
5Sit where you can hear
Choose a spot near enough to follow the words, not at the back where you will drift.
“O you who have believed, when [the adhan] is called for the prayer on the day of Jumu'ah [Friday], then proceed to the remembrance of Allah and leave trade. That is better for you, if you only knew.”
Innamal mu'minoonal lazeena izaa zukiral laahu wajilat quloobuhum wa izaa tuliyat 'alaihim Aayaatuhoo zaadat hum eemaananw wa 'alaa Rabbihim yatawakkaloon
“The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely -”
“When the Imam is delivering the Khutba, and you ask your companion to keep quiet and listen, then no doubt you have done an evil act.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 934
“He who took a bath and then came for Jumu'a prayer and then prayed what was fixed for him, then kept silence till the Imam finished the sermon, and then prayed along with him, his sins between that time and the next Friday would be forgiven, and even of three days more.”
Sahih Muslim 857a
Do this before next time
Listen for one point in this week's khutbah and tell a parent about it afterwards.
Lesson 5 · A gift to the Prophet ﷺ · ages 8-11
Sending salawat on Friday
The Prophet ﷺ asked us to send more blessings upon him on Friday, because they are presented to him.
1The hadith
Aws ibn Aws reported the Prophet ﷺ said among the most excellent of your days is Friday, so send more blessings upon him on that day, for they are submitted to him.
2How he answered them
When the people asked how, given that his body would have decayed, he said Allah has forbidden the earth from consuming the bodies of the prophets.
3Allah does it too
Allah says that He and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ, and tells the believers to do the same.
4What to say
The short form is: sallallahu alayhi wa sallam — Allah's blessings and peace be upon him.
5Count them
Set a small number for Friday and keep it every week.
Innal laaha wa malaaa'i katahoo yusalloona 'alan Nabiyy; yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanoo salloo 'alaihi wa sallimoo tasleemaa
“Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.”
“Among the most excellent of your days is Friday; on it Adam was created, on it he died, on it the last trumpet will be blown, and on it the shout will be made, so invoke more blessings on me that day, for your blessings will be submitted to me.”
Sunan Abi Dawud 1047
Memorise this
صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ
Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam
May Allah send blessings and peace upon him.
Qur'an 33:56 (command to send salawat)
Do this before next time
Send salawat on the Prophet ﷺ a hundred times this Friday, counting on your fingers.
