Belonging to something bigger

The masjid & the ummah

A child who prays alone at home is still part of a body that stretches around the world. These lessons give the practical side of belonging: the two rak'ah on walking in, the words to repeat after the mu'adhdhin, the silence during the khutbah, and the five duties the Prophet ﷺ listed — answering salaam, visiting the sick, following funerals, accepting invitations and replying to a sneeze.

Lesson 1 · Two rak'ah first · ages 5-7

Entering the masjid

Right foot in, shoes neat, and two rak'ah before you sit down — the masjid is greeted with prayer, not with talk.

  1. Pray before you sit

The Prophet ﷺ said if anyone of you enters a mosque, he should pray two rak'ah before sitting.

  2. Say the dua

On entering, ask Allah to open the doors of His mercy; on leaving, ask for His favour.

  3. Right foot in

Entering with the right foot and leaving with the left is the sunnah of the doorway.

  4. Masjids are for Allah

Allah says the masjids belong to Him, so nothing else is called upon inside them.

  5. Keep it calm

No running, no shouting and no dropped litter — the building is only as clean as the children in it.

Surah Al-Jinn · 72:18

“And [He revealed] that the masjids are for Allah, so do not invoke with Allah anyone.”

Surah At-Tawba · 9:18

“The mosques of Allah are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day and establish prayer and give zakah and do not fear except Allah, for it is expected that those will be of the [rightly] guided.”

Surah An-Noor · 24:36

Fee buyootin azinal laahu an turfa'a wa yuzkara feehasmuhoo yusabbihu lahoo feehaa bilghuduwwi wal aasaal

“[Such niches are] in mosques which Allah has ordered to be raised and that His name be mentioned therein; exalting Him within them in the morning and the evenings”

“If anyone of you enters a mosque, he should pray two rak'at before sitting.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 444

Do this before next time

Next masjid visit: shoes neat, right foot first, two rak'ah before sitting. Do all three.

Lesson 2 · Answering the call · ages 5-7

When the adhan is called

The adhan is an invitation with your name on it. You repeat it, send salam on the Prophet ﷺ, then ask for his rank in Paradise.

  1. Repeat after the mu'adhdhin

The Prophet ﷺ said whenever you hear the adhan, say what the mu'adhdhin is saying.

  2. Then send blessings

After the adhan, send salawat on the Prophet ﷺ — whoever does gets ten blessings from Allah.

  3. Then ask for al-Wasilah

Asking Allah to give the Prophet ﷺ that rank in Paradise earns his intercession.

  4. Hayya 'ala as-salah

'Come to prayer' is answered with la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah, then by going.

  5. Stop what you were doing

Games and screens pause for two minutes. That pause is the lesson.

Surah Al-Jumu'a · 62:9

Surah Al-Baqara · 2:238

Surah Al-Israa · 17:78

Aqimis Salaata liduloo kish shamsi ilaa ghasaqil laili wa quraanal Fajri inna quraa nal Fajri kaana mashhoodaa

“Establish prayer at the decline of the sun [from its meridian] until the darkness of the night and [also] the Qur'an of dawn. Indeed, the recitation of dawn is ever witnessed.”

“Whenever you hear the Adhan, say what the Mu'adh-dhin is saying.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 611

“When you hear the Mu'adhdhin, repeat what he says, then invoke a blessing on me, for everyone who invokes a blessing on me will receive ten blessings from Allah; then beg from Allah al-Wasila for me.”

Sahih Muslim 384

Do this before next time

Repeat the whole adhan quietly the next time you hear it, then say the salawat.

Lesson 3 · Friday · ages 8-11

Jumu'ah: the weekly gathering

Friday has a prayer no other day has — and a khutbah you listen to in complete silence.

  1. Answer the call

Allah tells the believers, when the call to Friday prayer is made, to hurry to the remembrance of Allah and leave off trade.

  2. Silence during the khutbah

The Prophet ﷺ said that if you tell your companion to be quiet while the imam gives the khutbah, you have lost the reward of your Jumu'ah.

  3. Wash and dress well

Ghusl, clean clothes and good scent before Jumu'ah are part of the day's sunnah.

  4. Come early

The earlier rows and earlier arrival carry more reward — leaving on time is worship.

  5. It is not a day off

Jumu'ah is a gathering, not a holiday: you go, you listen, and you pray in rows.

Surah Al-Jumu'a · 62:9

Surah Al-Jumu'a · 62:10

Surah Al-Jumu'a · 62:11

“When the Imam is delivering the Khutba, and you ask your companion to keep quiet, then you have lost the reward of your Friday prayer.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 934

Do this before next time

This Friday, sit through the whole khutbah without speaking once, then tell someone one thing you heard.

Lesson 4 · What you owe · ages 8-11

The five rights

The Prophet ﷺ listed five things every Muslim owes another — small acts that hold a community together.

  1. Answer the salaam

Returning a greeting is not optional politeness; it is a right the other person has over you.

  2. Visit the sick

A card, a call or a five-minute visit is the sunnah being kept alive.

  3. Follow the funeral

Walking with a janazah is how the community carries grief together.

  4. Accept an invitation

Turning up when you are invited honours the person who invited you.

  5. Reply to a sneeze

They say alhamdulillah, you say yarhamuk Allah — a tiny sunnah children can own.

Surah An-Nisaa · 4:86

Wa izaa huyyeetum bitahiy yatin fahaiyoo bi ahsana minhaaa aw ruddoohaa; innal laaha kaana 'alaa kulli shai'in Haseeba

“And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it [in a like manner]. Indeed, Allah is ever, over all things, an Accountant.”

Surah Al-Hujuraat · 49:10

“The believers are but brothers, so make settlement between your brothers. And fear Allah that you may receive mercy.”

Surah At-Tawba · 9:71

“The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those - Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.”

“The rights of a Muslim on the Muslims are five: to respond to the salaam, visiting the sick, to follow the funeral processions, to accept an invitation, and to reply to those who sneeze.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 1240

Lesson 5 · Feeling it together · ages 12-15

The ummah is one body

When one Muslim anywhere is hurt, the rest are supposed to feel it — like a body that cannot sleep because of one aching limb.

  1. The similitude of one body

The Prophet ﷺ compared the believers' mutual love to one body: when a limb aches, the whole body stays awake with fever.

  2. Believers are brothers

Allah states plainly that the believers are brothers, so peace-making between them is a duty.

  3. Dua crosses borders

You may not be able to send money, but you can name people in your dua tonight.

  4. Give something real

Sadaqah for people you will never meet is how the body feeds itself.

  5. Do not mock difference

Different languages, colours and madhhabs are inside one ummah — Allah made the difference on purpose.

Surah Al-Hujuraat · 49:10

“And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided. And remember the favor of Allah upon you - when you were enemies and He brought your hearts together and you became, by His favor, brothers. And you were on the edge of a pit of the Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus does Allah make clear to you His verses that you may be guided.”

“The similitude of believers in regard to mutual love, affection, fellow-feeling is that of one body; when any limb of it aches, the whole body aches, because of sleeplessness and fever.”
