How the Book reaches you

Living with the Qur'an

Children recite the Qur'an long before they think about where it came from. These lessons fill that gap: the cave of Hira and the first words revealed, the promise made to whoever learns it and teaches it, the two rewards for the child who still stumbles over the letters, why Al-Fatihah is called the greatest surah, why memorisation must be revised, and what makes Surah Al-Ikhlas equal to a third of the Qur'an. Every point below is anchored to an ayah reference and a hadith from Bukhari or Muslim in the wording those books use.

How revelation began

The Qur'an did not arrive as a finished book. It came down over twenty-three years, starting in a cave outside Makkah.

  1. It started with 'Read'

The first words revealed to the Prophet ﷺ told him to read in the name of his Lord who created.

  2. Jibril brought it

The angel Jibril carried the revelation; the Prophet ﷺ described seeing him between the sky and the earth.

  3. Then it came regularly

After a pause, Surah Al-Muddathir was revealed and, as the Prophet ﷺ said, revelation then came strongly, frequently and regularly.

  4. Sent down in stages

Allah says it was sent in parts so it could be recited to people gradually — one situation at a time.

  5. Ramadan is its month

The Qur'an began to be revealed in Ramadan, which is why the month and the Book belong together.

Surah Al-Alaq · 96:1

Iqra bismi rab bikal lazee khalaq

Surah Al-Alaq · 96:2

Khalaqal insaana min 'alaq

“Created man from a clinging substance.”

Surah Al-Alaq · 96:3

Iqra wa rab bukal akram

“Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous -”

Surah Al-Israa · 17:106

Wa quraanan faraqnaahu litaqra ahoo 'alan naasi 'alaa muksinw wa nazzalnaahu tanzeelaa

“And [it is] a Qur'an which We have separated [by intervals] that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period. And We have sent it down progressively.”

Surah Al-Baqara · 2:185

“The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.”

“While I was walking, all of a sudden I heard a voice from the sky. I looked up and saw the same angel who had visited me at the cave of Hira' sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth... After this the revelation started coming strongly, frequently and regularly.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 4

Lesson 2 · Best of people · ages 5-7

Learn it, then teach it

The Prophet ﷺ named one group the best among the Muslims: those who learn the Qur'an and teach it.

  1. The hadith

The Prophet ﷺ said the best among you are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it.

  2. Teaching can be tiny

Showing a younger sibling one letter or one ayah already puts you inside this hadith.

  3. Allah made it easy to remember

Allah repeats that He made the Qur'an easy to remember — so ask Him for help before blaming yourself.

  4. Recite carefully

Allah tells us to recite the Qur'an in a slow, measured way rather than racing through it.

  5. A trade that never loses

Allah describes those who recite His Book and give as people hoping for a trade that will never fail.

Surah Faatir · 35:29

Innal lazeena yatloona Kitabbal laahi wa aqaamus Salaata wa anfaqoo mimmaa razaqnaahum sirranw wa 'alaa niyatany yarjoona tijaaratal lan taboor

“Indeed, those who recite the Book of Allah and establish prayer and spend [in His cause] out of what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, [can] expect a profit that will never perish -”

Surah Al-Qamar · 54:17

Wa laqad yassamal Quraana liz zikri fahal mimmuddakir

“And We have certainly made the Qur'an easy for remembrance, so is there any who will remember?”

Surah Al-Muzzammil · 73:4

Aw zid 'alaihi wa rattilil Qur'aana tarteela

“Or add to it, and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation.”

“The best among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5027

Lesson 3 · The stumbling reciter · ages 5-7

Two rewards for trying

The child who finds recitation hard is not behind. The Prophet ﷺ said that child gets two rewards.

  1. The hadith

The Prophet ﷺ said one who is proficient in the Qur'an is with the noble scribes, and one who falters in it and finds it difficult has two rewards.

  2. Difficulty is counted

The effort itself is rewarded — so a slow reader is being paid twice for the same page.

  3. Never mock a reciter

Laughing at someone's pronunciation is laughing at someone Allah is rewarding.

  4. Guidance is the point

Allah says this Qur'an guides to what is most upright and gives good news to the believers.

  5. It is healing

Allah calls His Book a healing and a mercy for the believers.

Surah Al-Israa · 17:9

Inna haazal Quraana yahdee lillatee hiya aqwamu wa yubashshirul mu'mineenal lazeena ya'maloonas saalihaati anna lahum ajran kabeeraa

“Indeed, this Qur'an guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward.”

Surah Yunus · 10:57

Yaaa aiyuhan naasu qad jaaa'atkum maw 'izatum mir Rabbikum wa shifaaa'ul limaa fis sudoori wa hudanw wa rahmatul lilmu'mineen

“O mankind, there has to come to you instruction from your Lord and healing for what is in the breasts and guidance and mercy for the believers.”

“One who is proficient in the Qur'an is associated with the noble... and he who falters in it, and finds it difficult for him, will have two rewards.”

Lesson 4 · Al-Fatihah · ages 8-11

The greatest surah

Al-Fatihah is seven ayahs you say in every rakah — and the Prophet ﷺ called it the greatest surah in the Qur'an.

  1. The hadith

The Prophet ﷺ told a companion that Al-Fatihah is the greatest surah in the Qur'an — the seven oft-repeated verses.

  2. Seven ayahs

It opens with praise of Allah, the Most Merciful, and Sovereign of the Day of Recompense.

  3. It is a dua

Half of it is you asking: guide us to the straight path — which is why it is repeated in every prayer.

  4. We worship You alone

The middle ayah is the whole of tawhid in a few words: You alone we worship, and from You alone we ask help.

  5. Say it with meaning

Learning the meaning changes the prayer from sound into conversation.

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:1

Bismillaahir Rahmaanir Raheem

“In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.”

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:2

Alhamdu lillaahi Rabbil 'aalameen

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:4

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:5

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:6

Ihdinas-Siraatal-Mustaqeem

“Guide us to the straight path -”

Surah Al-Faatiha · 1:7

Siraatal-lazeena an'amta 'alaihim ghayril-maghdoobi 'alaihim wa lad-daaalleen

“The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have evoked [Your] anger or of those who are astray.”

“It is Al-Hamdu lil-lahi Rabbil-'Alamin (i.e. Surat Al-Fatihah) which is the seven oft-repeated verses and the Grand Qur'an which has been given to me.”

Lesson 5 · Hifz · ages 12-15

Memorising and revising

Memorised Qur'an slips away faster than a camel escapes its rope — unless you keep coming back to it.

  1. The warning

The Prophet ﷺ said to commit yourself to the Qur'an, for it is more prone to break away than a camel from its bind.

  2. Revision beats new pages

Keeping five surahs solid is worth more than half-remembering fifty.

  3. Little and often

A few minutes daily holds memory better than one long session a week.

  4. Ask for more knowledge

Allah taught the Prophet ﷺ the dua: My Lord, increase me in knowledge.

  5. Allah will not let you forget

Allah says He will make you recite, so trust the process and keep turning up.

Surah Taa-Haa · 20:114

Fata'aalal laahul Malikul Haqq; wa laa ta'jal bil Quraani min qabli ai yuqdaaa ilaika wahyuhoo wa qur Rabbi zidnee 'ilmaa

“So high [above all] is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth. And, [O Muhammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur'an before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."”

Surah Al-A'laa · 87:6

“Except what Allah should will. Indeed, He knows what is declared and what is hidden.”

Lesson 6 · Al-Ikhlas · ages 8-11

A third of the Qur'an

Four short ayahs describe Allah so completely that the Prophet ﷺ said the surah equals a third of the Qur'an.

  1. The hadith

The Prophet ﷺ said of Surah Al-Ikhlas: by Him in Whose Hand my life is, this surah is equal to one-third of the Qur'an.

  2. Why a third

The Qur'an teaches belief, law and stories; this surah is pure belief about Allah Himself.

  3. He is One

Say: He is Allah, the One — nothing shares His right to be worshipped.

  4. He needs nothing

Al-Samad: everything depends on Him and He depends on nothing.

  5. No family, no equal

He does not give birth, was not born, and there is nothing at all like Him.

Surah Al-Ikhlaas · 112:1

Qul huwal laahu ahad

“Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,”

Surah Al-Ikhlaas · 112:2

“Allah, the Eternal Refuge.”

Surah Al-Ikhlaas · 112:3

Surah Al-Ikhlaas · 112:4

Wa lam yakul-lahu kufuwan ahad
