Told by Allah, not by us

Stories in the Qur'an

Children love stories, and Islam has the safest ones: the accounts Allah chose to put in the Qur'an. Every lesson here names the surah so a child can open it and read the story at the source, and adds only hadith that are recorded in Bukhari or Muslim. Nothing is embroidered — where the Qur'an is silent, so are we.

Lesson 1 · Surah Luqman · ages 8-11

Luqman's advice to his son

Allah records a wise man teaching his own child: worship only Allah, honour your parents, pray, be humble, and lower your voice.

  1. Wisdom was a gift

Allah says He gave Luqman wisdom, and the first thing he did with it was thank Allah.

  2. Never give Allah a partner

His first advice to his son was to never associate anything with Allah, calling shirk a great wrong.

  3. Allah sees the smallest thing

Even a mustard seed inside a rock is known to Allah — nothing a child does is unseen.

  4. Pray, and be patient

He told his son to establish salah, encourage good, forbid wrong and bear whatever comes patiently.

  5. Do not strut, do not shout

The advice ends with walking humbly and lowering the voice — manners, not just belief.

Surah Luqman · 31:12

Wa laqad aatainaa Luqmaanal hikmata anishkur lillaah; wa many yashkur fa innamaa yashkuru linafsihee wa man kafara fa innal laaha Ghaniyyun Hameed

“And We had certainly given Luqman wisdom [and said], "Be grateful to Allah." And whoever is grateful is grateful for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever denies [His favor] - then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.”

Surah Luqman · 31:13

“And [mention, O Muhammad], when Luqman said to his son while he was instructing him, "O my son, do not associate [anything] with Allah. Indeed, association [with him] is great injustice."”

Surah Luqman · 31:16

“[And Luqman said], "O my son, indeed if wrong should be the weight of a mustard seed and should be within a rock or [anywhere] in the heavens or in the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle and Acquainted.”

Surah Luqman · 31:17

“O my son, establish prayer, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and be patient over what befalls you. Indeed, [all] that is of the matters [requiring] determination.”

Surah Luqman · 31:18

Wa laa tusa'-'ir khaddaka linnaasi wa laa tamshi fil ardi maarahan innal laaha laa yuhibbu kulla mukhtaalin fakhoor

“And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.”

Surah Luqman · 31:19

Lesson 2 · Surah al-Kahf · ages 8-11

The sleepers in the cave

Young believers walked away from a town that worshipped idols, hid in a cave, and Allah kept them safe for years.

  1. They were young

The Qur'an calls them youths who believed, and Allah increased them in guidance.

  2. They said it out loud

They stood and declared that their Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth.

  3. Allah guarded their sleep

Allah turned them in their sleep and covered the cave — protection they could not have arranged.

  4. Waking up changed nothing

When they woke, their first thought was still Allah, and their coins were the proof of the years that had passed.

  5. Memorise the opening

The Prophet ﷺ said whoever learns the first ten verses of Surah al-Kahf by heart is protected from the Dajjal.

Surah Al-Kahf · 18:10

Surah Al-Kahf · 18:14

“And We made firm their hearts when they stood up and said, "Our Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth. Never will we invoke besides Him any deity. We would have certainly spoken, then, an excessive transgression.”

Surah Al-Kahf · 18:16

“[The youths said to one another], "And when you have withdrawn from them and that which they worship other than Allah, retreat to the cave. Your Lord will spread out for you of His mercy and will prepare for you from your affair facility."”

Surah Al-Kahf · 18:18

“And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror.”

“If anyone learns by heart the first ten verses of the Surah al-Kahf, he will be protected from the Dajjal.”

Lesson 3 · Surah Maryam · ages 8-11

Maryam, the best of women

Allah chose Maryam, purified her, and gave her a son by His word alone — and the Prophet ﷺ called her the best woman of her time.

  1. Chosen and purified

The angels told her Allah had chosen her and purified her above the women of her time.

  2. She worshipped in private

Maryam withdrew to a quiet place; her strength came from time alone with Allah.

  3. Allah only says 'Be'

When she asked how she could have a child, the answer was that Allah creates by His command.

  4. The palm and the stream

In her hardest moment Allah sent her dates and water — help arrives in the middle of difficulty, not only after it.

  5. Isa spoke the truth

The child said he was a servant of Allah given the Book — never a god, never a son of God.

Lesson 4 · Surah an-Naml · ages 5-7

Sulayman and the ant

A king who could hear an ant speak still said 'my Lord' — and Allah taught that even ants glorify Him.

  1. A gift of understanding

Sulayman said he was taught the speech of the birds and given from every good thing.

  2. The ant warned its people

One ant told the others to go into their homes so Sulayman's army would not crush them.

  3. He smiled and thanked Allah

His reaction to power was gratitude, and a dua to be able to do righteous deeds.

  4. Ants glorify Allah too

The Prophet ﷺ rebuked burning an ant colony, calling ants a nation that glorifies Allah.

  5. So watch where you step

Small creatures are not toys — Islam gives them a status a child can respect.

Lesson 5 · Surah al-Kahf · ages 12-15

The man with two gardens

A rich man thought his gardens were his own achievement. They were gone by morning — and his poorer friend was the wiser one.

  1. He forgot Who gave it

He walked into his garden and said he did not think it would ever perish.

  2. The friend's correction

His companion asked why he did not say 'Ma sha' Allah, la quwwata illa billah' when he entered.

  3. It ended overnight

The fruit was destroyed and he was left wringing his hands over what he had spent.

  4. Wealth is a test, not a score

“Wealth and children are [but] adornment of the worldly life. But the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord for reward and better for [one's] hope.”

“Wealth is not in having many possessions, but rather (true) wealth is feeling sufficiency in the soul.”

Lesson 6 · Surah al-Fil · ages 5-7

The army of the elephant

An army came to destroy the Ka'bah. Allah stopped it with birds and small stones, before the Prophet ﷺ was even born.

  1. A short surah, a real event

Allah asks if you have not seen how He dealt with the companions of the elephant.

  2. Their plan failed

Allah made their scheme go astray — the strongest army of the day did not reach the House.

  3. Birds and stones

Flocks were sent against them, striking them with stones of baked clay.

  4. Left like chewed straw

The surah ends with the army scattered like eaten stubble — power means nothing against Allah.

  5. Allah protects His House

Makkah was kept safe long before the ummah existed; He does not need our help to protect His religion.
