Shama'il — his daily habits

How the Prophet ﷺ lived

We are told to follow the Prophet ﷺ, and following him starts with the ordinary parts of a day — a meal, getting dressed, helping in the house, greeting a child. The narrations below describe exactly these things, and every one carries its collection and number so a parent or teacher can check it.

Lesson 1 · A smile is charity · ages 5-7

He smiled at people

The Prophet ﷺ met people with a cheerful face. He taught that smiling at your brother is a real good deed, not just good manners.

  1. The teaching

The Prophet ﷺ said that smiling in the face of your brother is charity.

  2. A good deed anyone can do

You do not need money to give charity. A child with nothing to give can still smile.

  3. Part of his character

Allah describes the Prophet ﷺ in the Qur'an as being of a great and noble character.

  4. Start at home

The easiest people to forget to smile at are the ones we see every single day.

  5. Not fake

Smiling is meant to make the other person feel welcome, not to hide our hearts from Allah.

Surah Al-Qalam · 68:4

وَإِنَّكَ لَعَلَىٰ خُلُقٍ عَظِيمٍۢ

Wa innaka la'alaa khuluqin 'azeem

“And indeed, you are of a great moral character.”

“Your smiling in the face of your brother is charity.”

Lesson 2 · Three simple rules · ages 5-7

How he ate

The Prophet ﷺ taught a boy three things about eating in one short sentence, and Muslims have followed them ever since.

  1. The narration

Umar ibn Abi Salamah was a boy eating with the Prophet ﷺ, who told him: mention Allah's name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you.

  2. Bismillah first

Saying Bismillah turns an ordinary meal into an act of worship.

  3. Right hand

We eat and drink with the right hand, as the Prophet ﷺ did.

  4. Take from your own side

Reaching across the dish for the best pieces is bad manners in Islam.

  5. Be grateful, not fussy

The Qur'an tells us to eat from what is lawful and good and to thank Allah for it.

Surah Al-Baqara · 2:172

Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo kuloo min taiyibaati maa razaqnaakum washkuroo lillaahi in kuntum iyyaahu ta'budoon

“O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.”

“O boy, mention the name of Allah, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is in front of you.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5376

Practise all three at your next meal: Bismillah, right hand, and only from your side of the plate.

Lesson 3 · Clean, simple, not proud · ages 8-11

How he dressed

The Prophet ﷺ liked clean, simple clothing and told us to look after our appearance without becoming proud of it.

  1. He loved white

The Prophet ﷺ told us to wear white clothing, saying it is among the best of our clothing.

  2. Tidy, not showy

Allah is beautiful and loves beauty, but the same hadith warns against arrogance.

  3. Right side first

He liked to begin with the right side when putting on clothes and shoes.

  4. Clothes are a blessing

The Qur'an calls clothing a favour from Allah, given both for covering and for beauty.

  5. Never look down

A new jacket is not a reason to feel above the child wearing an old one.

Surah Al-A'raaf · 7:26

Yaa Baneee Aadama qad anzalnaa 'alaikum libaasany yuwaaree saw aatikum wa reeshanw wa libaasut taqwaa zaalika khair; zaalika min Aayaatil laahi la'allahum yaz zakkaroon

“O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember.”

“Wear white clothes, for they are the best of your clothes.”

Sunan Abi Dawud 4061

“Verily, Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace. Pride is disdaining the truth and contempt for the people.”

Sahih Muslim 91

Do this before next time

Lay out clean clothes tonight for tomorrow, and start with the right sleeve when you put them on.

Lesson 4 · The best of people served · ages 8-11

He helped at home

Aishah was asked what the Prophet ﷺ did inside his own house. Her answer surprises many children: he served his family.

  1. The narration

Aishah was asked what the Prophet ﷺ used to do at home, and she said he was in the service of his family until the time of prayer came, and then he went out to pray.

  2. Housework is beneath nobody

The greatest of all people mended, cleaned and helped in his own home.

  3. Then salah

Notice the order: he served, and when the time for prayer came he went to pray. Both matter.

  4. For boys too

Helping at home is Sunnah for sons just as much as for daughters.

  5. Start small

Clearing your own plate is a real Sunnah act when it is done for Allah.

“He used to be in the service of his family, and when the time for prayer came he would go out to pray.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 676

Do this before next time

Pick one household job nobody asked you to do, and do it quietly this week.

Lesson 5 · Mercy you can see · ages 5-7

He was gentle with children

The Prophet ﷺ kissed his grandchildren and greeted children in the street. He said whoever shows no mercy will not be shown mercy.

  1. The narration

When a man said he had many children and had never kissed any of them, the Prophet ﷺ said: whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.

  2. Mercy is normal

Kindness to small children is not weakness; it is exactly how the Prophet ﷺ behaved.

  3. He greeted children

He would pass children and give them salam, treating them as people who matter.

  4. He was sent as mercy

The Qur'an says he was sent as a mercy to all the worlds.

  5. Your turn

Younger brothers, sisters and cousins are the first place to practise mercy.

Surah Al-Anbiyaa · 21:107

وَمَآ أَرْسَلْنَٰكَ إِلَّا رَحْمَةًۭ لِّلْعَٰلَمِينَ

Wa maaa arsalnaaka illaa rahmatal lil'aalameen

“And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a mercy to the worlds.”

“Whoever is not merciful to others will not be treated mercifully.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 5997
