Pride is the sickness that spoils good deeds, and humility is the cure the Prophet ﷺ modelled every day. He ﷺ warned that whoever has a mustard seed of pride in his heart will not enter Paradise, and defined pride as rejecting the truth and looking down on people. He said no one humbles himself for Allah's sake except that Allah raises him. Aisha said he kept himself busy serving his family at home until it was time to pray. He said if he were invited to a meal of trotters he would accept it. And Anas greeted a group of boys and said the Prophet ﷺ used to do that. These five lessons give a child the words, the stories and the daily habits of tawadu'. Every point carries its ayah or hadith reference.
Lesson 1 · What pride is · ages 8-11
A mustard seed of pride
The Prophet ﷺ said pride is rejecting the truth and looking down on people, and warned about even a seed of it.
1The hadith
Ibn Mas'ud reported the Prophet ﷺ said he who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride shall not enter Paradise.
2Nice clothes are not pride
When a man asked about liking fine dress, the Prophet ﷺ said Allah is Graceful and loves grace.
3The real definition
In the same hadith he ﷺ defined pride as disdaining the truth and having contempt for people.
4Test yourself
If you cannot say I was wrong, or you look down on someone poorer, that is the seed to pull out.
5Allah does not love it
Allah says He does not love the arrogant boaster, and tells us not to walk the earth in pride.
Wa laa tusa'-'ir khaddaka linnaasi wa laa tamshi fil ardi maarahan innal laaha laa yuhibbu kulla mukhtaalin fakhoor
“And do not turn your cheek [in contempt] toward people and do not walk through the earth exultantly. Indeed, Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful.”
Likailaa taasaw 'alaa maa faatakum wa laa tafrahoo bimaaa aataakum; wallaahu laa yuhibbu kulla mukhtaalin fakhoor
“In order that you not despair over what has eluded you and not exult [in pride] over what He has given you. And Allah does not like everyone self-deluded and boastful -”
“He who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride shall not enter Paradise... Pride is disdaining the truth (out of self-conceit) and contempt for the people.”
Sahih Muslim 91a

Lesson 2 · The promise · ages 8-11
Go low and Allah lifts you
The Prophet ﷺ said charity does not decrease wealth, forgiving increases honour, and humbling yourself for Allah raises you.
1The hadith
Abu Huraira reported the Prophet ﷺ said charity does not decrease wealth, no one forgives another except that Allah increases his honour, and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises his status.
2Three surprises
Each half of the hadith looks backwards to us: giving grows, forgiving honours, going low lifts.
3For Allah's sake
Humility in the hadith is tied to Allah — not to being a pushover or fearing people.
4Allah lifts who He wills
Allah says the servants of the Most Merciful walk humbly on the earth.
5In the classroom
Letting someone else answer, or admitting you do not know, is this hadith in practice.
Wa 'ibaadur Rahmaanil lazeena yamshoona 'alal ardi hawnanw wa izaa khaata bahumul jaahiloona qaaloo salaamaa
“And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace,”
“That home of the Hereafter We assign to those who do not desire exaltedness upon the earth or corruption. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.”
Sa asrifu 'an Aayaatiyal lazeena yatakabbaroona fil ardi bighairil haqq; wa iny-yaraw kulla Aayatil laa yu'minoo bihaa wa iny-yaraw sabeelar rushdi laa yattakhizoohu sabeelanw wa iny-yaraw sabeelal ghaiyi yatta khizoohu sabeelaa; zaalika bi annahum kazzaboo bi Aayaatinaa wa kaanoo 'anhaa ghaafileen
“I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant upon the earth without right; and if they should see every sign, they will not believe in it. And if they see the way of consciousness, they will not adopt it as a way; but if they see the way of error, they will adopt it as a way. That is because they have denied Our signs and they were heedless of them.”
“Charity does not decrease wealth, no one forgives another except that Allah increases his honor, and no one humbles himself for the sake of Allah except that Allah raises his status.”
Sahih Muslim 2588

Lesson 3 · At home · ages 5-7
He served his own family
Aisha was asked what the Prophet ﷺ did at home: he kept himself busy serving his family until it was time to pray.
1The hadith
Al-Aswad asked Aisha what the Prophet ﷺ used to do in his house; she said he used to keep himself busy serving his family, and when it was time for prayer he would go for it.
2The greatest man, sweeping
The leader of the ummah did ordinary housework; no job at home is beneath a Muslim.
3Boys too
This is a hadith about the Prophet ﷺ himself, so helping at home is sunnah for sons as much as daughters.
4Then he prayed
Serving family and praying are not rivals — he moved from one to the other.
5Allah joins the two
Allah tells the Prophet ﷺ to command his family to pray and to be steadfast in it himself.
Waamur ahlaka bis Salaati wastabir 'alaihaa la nas'aluka rizqaa; nahnu narzuquk; wal 'aaqibatu littaqwaa
“And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.”
Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena samanoo qooo anfusakum wa ahleekum naaranw waqoodu han naasu wal hijaaratu 'alaihaa malaaa'ikatun ghilaazun shidaadul laa ya'soonal laaha maa amarahum wa yaf'aloona maa yu'maroon
“O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.”
Wa kaana yaamuru ahlahoo bis Salaati waz zakaati wa kaana 'inda Rabbihee mardiyyaa
“And he used to enjoin on his people prayer and zakah and was to his Lord pleasing.”
“He used to keep himself busy serving his family and when it was the time for prayer he would go for it.”
Sahih al-Bukhari 676

Lesson 4 · No snobbery · ages 8-11
Accepting the simplest gift
The Prophet ﷺ said if he were invited to a meal of trotters he would accept, and if given one as a present he would accept it.
1The hadith
Abu Huraira reported the Prophet ﷺ said if I am invited to a meal of trotters I will accept it, and if I am given a trotter as a present I will accept it.
2Trotters were cheap
He named the humblest food on purpose: the gift is honoured, however small.
3Never mock a gift
Turning your nose up at simple food or a cheap present hurts the giver and shows pride.
4Never criticise food
The Sunnah of eating is to be grateful for what is served and to leave what you dislike quietly.
5Allah gives the rizq
Allah tells the believers to eat of the good things He provided and to give thanks to Him.
“Then eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And be grateful for the favor of Allah, if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.”
Wa izaa huyyeetum bitahiy yatin fahaiyoo bi ahsana minhaaa aw ruddoohaa; innal laaha kaana 'alaa kulli shai'in Haseeba
“And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it [in a like manner]. Indeed, Allah is ever, over all things, an Accountant.”
Laisa 'alal a'maa barajunw wa laa 'alal a'raji barajunw wa laa 'alal mareedi barajun wa laa 'alaa anfusikum an taakuloo mim buyootikum aw buyooti aabaaa'ikum aw buyooti ummahaatikum aw buyooti ikhwaanikum aw buyooti akhawaatikum aw buyooti a'maamikum aw buyooti 'ammaatikum aw buyooti akhwaalikum aw buyooti khaalaatikum aw maa malaktum mafaatihahooo aw sadeeqikum; laisa 'alaikum junaahun an taakuloo jamee'an aw ashtaata; fa izaa dakhaltum buyootan fasallimoo 'alaaa anfusikum tahiyyatam min 'indil laahi mubaarakatan taiyibah; kazaalika yubai yinul laahu lakumul Aayaati la'allakum ta'qiloon
“There is not upon the blind [any] constraint nor upon the lame constraint nor upon the ill constraint nor upon yourselves when you eat from your [own] houses or the houses of your fathers or the houses of your mothers or the houses of your brothers or the houses of your sisters or the houses of your father's brothers or the houses of your father's sisters or the houses of your mother's brothers or the houses of your mother's sisters or [from houses] whose keys you possess or [from the house] of your friend. There is no blame upon you whether you eat together or separately. But when you enter houses, give greetings of peace upon each other - a greeting from Allah, blessed and good. Thus does Allah make clear to you the verses [of ordinance] that you may understand.”
Wa izaa jaaa'akal lazeena yu'minoona bi Aayaatinaa faqul salaamun 'alaikum kataba Rabbukum 'alaa nafsihir rahmata annahoo man 'amila minkum sooo'am bijahaalatin summa taaba mim ba'dihee wa aslaha fa annahoo Ghafoorur Raheem
“And when those come to you who believe in Our verses, say, "Peace be upon you. Your Lord has decreed upon Himself mercy: that any of you who does wrong out of ignorance and then repents after that and corrects himself - indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful."”
“That he passed by a group of boys and greeted them and said, 'The Prophet used to do so.'”
